LANSING, Mich., Aug. 27, 2026 — This week, Michigan House Republicans adopted the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics ballot proposal and put the initiative up for a vote on the House floor. Prior to this political maneuver, Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks had publicly announced that the Michigan Senate would not take up this bill, ensuring that Michigan voters have the opportunity to vote on the proposal in the November election. After voting yes on the proposal, state Rep. Carol Glanville (D-Walker) issued the following statement on House Republicans’ attempt to trap Democratic members with a vote amounting to political theater:
“Ballot initiatives are one of the most powerful tools citizens have to make direct change in their government. I firmly believe Michigan voters deserve the final say on the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics proposal come November. Unfortunately, House Republicans saw this proposal as an opportunity to lay a political trap for Democratic members, forcing us to vote on an initiative that we both deeply support and trust Michigan voters to decide on.
“Knowing that the Senate would never take up the proposal, House Republicans hoped to gain ammunition against Democrats from this vote to use in their political ads. I refused to fall for their trap. Knowing that Michiganders would get their rightful opportunity to vote on this issue in November no matter what, I voted for what I believe in: people should drive the outcome of elections, not billionaires, utilities or corporations, and mopping up corporate money from politics will open the door to tackling the affordability issues on everybody’s minds.
“It is because of the will of Michigan voters that this proposal made it to the Legislature in the first place, and it will rightfully be because of Michigan voters whether this proposal is passed in the November election.”
