Earlier today, I was able to join these incoming James Madison College students during their tour of the capitol. JMC's Early Start Program supports first-generation students and others who may benefit from additional preparation before they begin their first semester at MSU, helping prepare undergrads for success when they start this fall!

My top priority since joining the Michigan Legislature has been passing the Justice for Survivors reforms that ensure childhood survivors of criminal sexual conduct have the time they deserve to file a claim.
This is a bipartisan effort - it was first spearheaded by a Republican Senator and passed unanimously out of the Republican-led Senate in 2018. This year, it passed with bipartisan support out of the Democrat-led Senate. The Chair of the Michigan Republican Party is quoted in this article offering his support for these reforms.
Yet, these bills were sent to the Government Operations - the Committee where our House Speaker sends legislation he intends to let die. It's not too late for the House to do the right thing and vote out these bills. I'm ready and willing to work with House Republicans to get this done.

The Superintendent of Mason Public Schools told reporters yesterday that they have enough funding to provide free breakfast and lunches for all through the end of September, but if the program is not funded, or if we reach a government shutdown, it will end.
I'm continuing to advocate for the continued funding of this program. Kids in Mason and across the district deserve to have their basic needs met while at school - a place we require them to be. In addition, the program saves families $850 a year annually - giving them a boost as we combat rising grocery prices.

Today, the Free Tax Prep Mobile came to the Capitol. VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is an amazing program that provides free tax returns to low-income taxpayers. The VITA bus (named "Max" for "Maximum Refund") recently finished its first tax season. Having a mobile unit allowed VITA volunteers to come directly to the taxpayers' communities.
Programs like this are made possible through federal and state funding. VITA relies on AmeriCorps to help staff it. Although the Trump Adminsitration's AmeriCorp cuts have been challenged successfully in court, we're still waiting for funding to be restored.
For every $1 invested in VITA, we bring an estimated $13 directly back to taxpayers and our local economy.

Back to school shopping is challenging enough without growing economic uncertainty caused by actions at the federal level and inaction from the Michigan House as we remain without a budget.
One way we can uplift families is through programs like Free Breakfast and Lunch For All, which ensures no child goes hungry and gives parents some relief on the grocery bill - estimated at $850 annually per child.
School meals aren't the only program on the line. Our education investments in rural transportation, mental health, safety infrastructure, at-risk programming, special education and more also have an uncertain future as schools prepare to start without a budget.

I stood with Democratic state senators from Texas today at a press conference opposing attempts to rig Texas' congressional elections by redrawing lines mid-decade.
President Trump has been openly and aggressively pushing the GOP in Texas to gerrymander their maps and create up to five new Republican seats ahead of midterms - which historically are unfavorable for the party of the sitting president.
The maps were redrawn and approved by the Republican Governor just four years ago, yet Texan Republicans have quickly moved to adopt a new map that dilutes the voices of people of color and those living in urban areas.
Texan Democrats have fled the state to prevent their Legislature from voting on this hyperpartisan, anti-democratic, blatant attempt to rig the outcome of our upcoming election.
In Michigan, I'm proud to have an independent redistricting commission that will work to fairly draw our districts every ten years in accordance with the census. Texas' move creates a dangerous precedent - already, several states are looking to re-balance the scales by drawing their own Congressional lines only IF Texas goes ahead with its plan. We desperately need Texan Republicans to show integrity and resist the White House's plea for more seats.

Last year, Democrats ensured that ALL students had access to free breakfast and lunch.
This year, uncertainty over the still unfinished budget means schools have to make hard decisions - like whether or not to maintain the free breakfast and lunch program - considering they have no idea how much funding they will receive from the state.
The key to raising test scores is investing in students, teachers and school programs, not causing chaos and uncertainty.

Today marks 60 years since Medicaid was signed into law. Medicaid is a program that has saved lives, protected families from bankruptcy, and ensured millions of Michiganders could see a doctor, fill a prescription, or access emergency care when they needed it most.
But this year, we’re not celebrating. We’re fighting.
More than 2.6 million Michiganders are on Medicaid. Most recipients are children and people with disabilities. Almost half of all births in the state are covered by Medicaid.
Yet Republicans are pushing the largest Medicaid cuts in American history based on lies. Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for Medicaid, and implementing work requirements on a population that is primarily children, seniors and people with disabilities will do nothing but make adminstering the program costlier and kick off recipients who do not have the time, capacity or technology to meet the administrative burden.
In addition, being uninsured doesn't prevent anyone from getting sick and needing care. Without Medicaid, rural hospitals may be forced to close their doors - leaving entire communities without access to care and driving up medical costs for everyone.
To make matters worse, House Republicans in Lansing still haven't passed a general government budget. That means we can’t plan for critical investments in health care, food access, or public schools, just when our communities need them most.
Medicaid has been a lifeline for 60 years. I will not stand by while its future is put at risk. I’m fighting to protect Michigan families, defend essential care, and pass a budget that puts people first.
