We cannot overlook the fact that Matt Hall and Michigan House Republicans openly violated the Michigan Constitution for over 18 months.

The Constitution won today, but today also showed that who you chose to work for you in government matters just as much.

Of the 9 bills that were vetoed today, five of them had no implementation dates tied to them at all.

House Bill 4901 protects modest homes from bankruptcy loss and would have applied when it was signed. There was no expired window, no timing issue.

House Bill 4900 would have updated Michigan’s debt collection rules —how much of a person’s wages, home, car, and other property creditors can take when collecting on a debt. It would have raised the exemption amounts (protecting more of what people own from garnishment) and adds notice requirements so people know their rights when a creditor comes after their money or belongings. It also stops debt collectors from seizing public assistance, Earned Income Tax Credit refunds, and disability which are meant to help low-income working families. One provision in this bill set the date for October 31, 2026, which is months away…

And House Bills 4177, 5817, and 5818 simply would have allowed counties to establish history museum authorities.

There were no date implementations or impact associated with allowing the counties to put a question on the ballot for voters to decide at a future time.

I was looking forward to celebrating with all of you the Michigan Supreme Court ruling this morning regarding the 9 bills. The court did not take up Speaker Hall’s petition and the decision was remanded back to the lower court, which ordered him to present the bills, including my bill HB 6058.

The bills were finally presented today, but unfortunately I was informed just a short while ago that the governor has vetoed the 9 bills.

I am completely crushed because we worked so hard this past year and a half to get them to her desk. Michigan workers, including corrections officers and teachers deserve better. Now they will have to wait for the legislature to act, to reintroduce these bills, and to get them to a new governor’s desk.

It cost the Michigan taxpayers over $300,000 in legal fees alone in the House; on top of the financial pain that workers have felt and will continue to feel coming out of their own pockets.

Despite this set back, I will continue to fight for and champion the causes that are important to you, and I ask that you look to your other leaders and demand the same.

I'm excited for Roseville High School students to have the opportunity to learn the skills it takes to run a food truck while gaining hands-on experience in culinary arts! The Michigan Supreme Court declined to take up Speaker Matt Hall’s petition challenging the lower court’s order and leaving that ruling in place!

The ruling requires him to present the 9 bills, including my bill, HB 6058, that he has unconstitutionally withheld for over a year and a half now.

These bills were passed by both chambers with a majority in December 2024. They must go to the governor’s desk now.

Matt Hall has run out of excuses. His costly ‘thorough legal review’ has cost Michigan taxpayers enough. I expect him to instruct the House Clerk to present these 9 bills immediately.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, 56 people signed their names to a document that changed the world. This year, America turned 250 and I had the honor of joining a public reading of the Declaration of Independence to mark it.

Reading those words out loud hits different. “All men are created equal” wasn’t fully true when it was written. But it gave us something to hold each other to, and since then, generations have spent 250 years fighting to make it real. That work isn’t finished. It’s our job now.

Thank you to the Daughters of the American Revolution, Detroit Chapter, for organizing this event and keeping our history alive. Grateful to have stood with neighbors, veterans, our military service members, and community leaders in reading our nation’s founding words together.

Happy 250th birthday, America. 🎇🇺🇸

ICYMI we passed Michigan’s FY27 state budget and School Aid Fund!

From the beginning, I made it clear that meeting the July 1 statutory deadline was critical because our schools, educators, and families rely on the Legislature to provide certainty before the start of the upcoming school year. I’m proud that we were able to work through our differences, find common ground, and deliver a responsible budget that invests in Michigan students and working families.
This budget increases the foundation allowance to $10,300 per pupil, invests nearly $502 million in student literacy, continues free Pre-K for every four-year-old, maintains free breakfast and lunch for all public school students, and makes child care more affordable.

Michigan Schools will be getting more funding overall with the foundational allowance increase and the new weighted formula.

If there are other schools you’d like to see, let me know in the comments.

I recently had the honor of touring the Refugee Development Center Newcomer Center (RDC) and meeting with refugee students participating in their summer programs.

Every day, hundreds of new Americans walk through RDC's doors seeking support, guidance, and opportunity. While many refugee assistance programs last only a matter of days or weeks, RDC continues to walk alongside families as they build their new lives here in Michigan.

From English and U.S. history classes to practical life skills like sewing, driving, and workforce readiness, RDC provides the tools and support people need to succeed and thrive.

Thank you to the dedicated staff, including Executive Director Erika Brown-Binion, volunteers, and community partners who are making a real difference in the lives of so many families.

RDC is a model organization, and one I wish every community had. Their work helps make the transition from refugee to American a little easier, while empowering individuals and families to reach their full potential.

I am grateful for the opportunity to learn more about their incredible work and the positive impact they are making every single day in the greater Lansing area.

One of my favorite childhood memories is walking downtown with my family to watch the Fourth of July fireworks. It became a tradition because my father never wanted to miss the chance to celebrate the country that had given our family a new beginning. He was so grateful to be in America, and those celebrations were a reminder of everything our family had overcome to get here.

America is the country my parents fought so hard to reach. To them, it was more than a place on a map, it was the land of freedom, where people could pursue an education, build a career, practice their faith, and create a better life regardless of where they came from or what they looked like.

Our nation was founded by people seeking freedom from oppression and authoritarian rule. The ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are what have inspired generations to come here in search of opportunity. That is the America those who came before us fought for, I grew up believing in, and it is the America I continue to believe in today.

The freedoms we enjoy today were earned through the sacrifices of those who came before us. It is our responsibility to protect those freedoms, strengthen our communities, and continue building a nation where opportunity remains within reach for every generation. My hope is that one day we'll look back with pride, knowing we each did our part to leave America stronger than we found it.

Thank you to the City of Roseville for putting on one of the most beautiful fireworks shows our community looks forward to every year. Traditions like these bring neighbors together and remind us that, despite our differences, we all share this country and the freedoms that unite us.

Today, I am proud to carry on this tradition with my own children.

Whether you're celebrating with family in your backyard, gathering with friends, or traveling to enjoy the holiday, I hope you have a safe and joyful Independence Day.

Let’s continue to uphold the freedoms that make America a beacon of hope for so many. Happy Birthday to the United States and Happy Independence Day to everyone!
