Michigan’s public sector has been experiencing a staffing crisis across schools, public safety departments and essential municipal services. We’ve heard directly from workers about the significant increases in health care costs they are facing. These rising costs are simply unsustainable for our teachers, fire fighters, and police officers. Today, I testified in the House Labor Committee on my legislation, House Bill 6058, which would help alleviate this crisis by making health care more affordable for public employees.

The legislation ensures that public employees will not pay more than 20% of their health insurance costs under renegotiated, renewed or extended collective bargaining agreements. Additionally, it increases the hard cap dollar amounts for existing agreements to keep up with inflation and provides greater flexibility for employers and employees in the bargaining process.

This legislation sends a clear message: We value the people who dedicate their lives to serving our communities. By improving their access to affordable health care, we can attract and retain the dedicated individuals our state needs to thrive. I am deeply grateful to my colleagues for recognizing the urgency of this issue and moving this legislation forward. Together, we can ensure that public employees and their families are supported while securing a stronger, more stable future for Michiganders.

🎉 Exciting update: My legislation, House Bill 5826, which would establish a scholarship program for individuals who demonstrate financial hardship and are training to become doulas, just passed the Senate with bipartisan support! This legislation will expand services to women living in underserved communities and ensure that they receive the care and support they deserve.

Doulas are essential non-medical professionals who significantly improve health outcomes for expectant mothers and babies.

As a mother and policymaker, I am grateful to my colleagues in the Senate for passing this key bill to expand maternal care across Michigan.

The bill will now return to the House floor for a final vote before heading to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law!

Proud to stand with our firefighters, paramedics, and first responders on the steps of the Capitol today to show support for House Bill 4688.

This bill recognizes that every community has unique needs and challenges and ensures that critical staffing decisions are made with input from those on the front lines. By making minimum staffing levels a mandatory topic in collective bargaining, we empower our first responders and their employers to address staffing shortages collaboratively.

To our firefighters, paramedics, and first responders: Thank you for your courage, your dedication, and your sacrifice. But you deserve more than our gratitude—you deserve policies that support your safety, your families, and your mission to protect us.

I humbly urge my colleagues to come together to pass House Bill 4688 and send a clear message: Michigan values its first responders. We see you, we hear you, and we stand with you. Together, we can ensure that every firefighter and paramedic has the resources they need to return home safely after each shift.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving and GO LIONS!

Today, as we gather with loved ones and share a meal, let’s take a moment to reflect on the blessings we sometimes take for granted—the food on our tables, the roofs over our heads, and the hands that make it all possible.

Behind every meal are hard-working farmers, food workers, and countless others who ensure we can nourish our families. And behind every family is someone doing their best to provide, no matter the challenges.

This Thanksgiving, I hope we all find a moment to express gratitude—not just for what we have, but for the people and communities who make it all possible.

May your day be filled with love, warmth, and the spirit of giving thanks.

With gratitude,

State Representative Mai Xiong

I’m proud to introduce the Reproductive Health Data Privacy Act, House Bill 6077, which will protect Michiganders’ private reproductive health information. My bill ensures family planning apps and services cannot collect or misuse your data without informed consent.

Reproductive health decisions are deeply personal, and Michiganders deserve to know they can trust their family planning services. Every person has a fundamental right to privacy, especially in health care spaces — reproductive health information should be no different. My bill will protect Michiganders’ right to securely use family planning services.

As technology advances and software applications become widely utilized for managing data and information, this legislation will ensure that individuals’ rights are protected. This legislation builds on our efforts in Michigan to safeguard access to family planning and reproductive health services, ensuring you can navigate your options securely and with peace of mind.

It was a busy and productive week in Lansing!

Despite the rainy and chilly weather, the view of our State Capitol never fails to inspire me.

This week, I introduced five new bills, cast votes on legislation to help move Michigan forward, attended key committee meetings, and had the privilege of meeting with constituents who shared their hopes and concerns.

With the session now wrapped up for November, I’ll be spending the next two weeks working with constituents and stakeholders to ensure we’re delivering real results for families.

When we reconvene in December, we’ll only have just 8 session days left this year. I’m determined to make every single one of them count!

Ms. Xiong, Please vote NO on bill 6068. Stop the overreach on kids, learn where parental guidance and rights are compared to the constant overstepping. The bill pushes trans agenda, waives clergy involvement, gives kids contraceptives behind their parent’s back, teaches masturbation and calls abortion “family planning”. There’s a reason most everything went red— this (along with any measures which seek to hide school content from parents) will lead to a mass exodus from MI public schools

I’m proud to have recently introduced legislation that lowers the health insurance cost for public employees and their families, contains future increases in these costs, and provides more flexibility in negotiations for both public employers and public employees.

House Bill 6058 increases the dollar amounts to keep up with inflation and provides that public employees cannot be required to pay more than 20% of the health care costs

This bill will make the necessary changes to ensure our public servants can continue to afford the health care insurance they and their families need. As our classrooms and other public services face staffing shortages, this bill will also help attract and retain public employees in our state, ensuring our communities can continue benefiting from the crucial services they provide.
