Happy Mother’s Week in the State of Michigan.

I’m proud to have introduced a bipartisan resolution this past week to honor and give thanks to moms and women who have made countless sacrifices to ensure our children have everything they need — even if it means putting our own needs aside.

I want to thank all the moms and women who care for others, for getting us through the hard times, and for continuing to guide and nurture our families today. You are the heart of our community and the foundation of our future.

This week, and everyday, let’s continue to honor all moms for their service to our families and our communities.

From one mom to another — a Happy Mother’s Day.

What an incredible way to give back and a great reminder of the importance of staying active—mind, body, and community!

This morning, I was proud to join the Roseville Community Schools Scholarship Foundation for the Joe Manfreda Dream Dash to help raise money for scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

It was an honor to run for such a meaningful cause—and my little ones were so proud of their mama for finishing her very first 5K!

During AANHPI Heritage Month, while we should be celebrating the rich contributions of Asian Americans, my Republican colleagues are reviving discriminatory policies from a century ago.

Yesterday House Bills 4233-34 were passed in the Michigan House that would ban individuals from purchasing land simply for being perceived as originally from seven specific countries, under the guise of national security and “America First.”

We’ve seen these kinds of discriminatory laws before — and we’re seeing them now. In the early 20th century, states like California and Florida enacted "alien land laws" to prevent Asian immigrants from owning property.

As a proud American and daughter of a Vietnam War veteran, I know what sacrifice looks like. At 17, my father was recruited by the C.I.A, and fought for this country, long before he ever became a U.S. citizen. My family eventually received asylum through the U. S. Refugee Admissions program, which the Trump administration has now dismantled through executive orders. Families who risked their lives, like mines, crossing dangerous rivers and oceans left everything behind in search of safety, freedom, and a better life.

These bills don't address affordable housing or bring down the cost of living, they don’t fund border security, or infrastructure. They do one thing: racially profile others by relying on realtors, the Secretary of State, and the attorney general to determine people’s national origin or political party affiliation.

These bills are an attempt to racially profile individuals, when they are out with their realtors doing something very normal and American —like looking for a home with a white picket fence to grow their family.

That’s not the America my parents believed in.

That’s not the America we should be building for the future.

In Oyama v. California (1948), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that land ownership restrictions based on national origin violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. We should learn from our past — not repeat its darkest chapters.

Florida's SB 264, which restricts property ownership for individuals from certain countries, has been challenged in federal court for violating constitutional protections. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals recently blocked its enforcement, citing a substantial likelihood that the law is unconstitutional.

Beyond legal challenges, these laws have tangible economic repercussions. Florida's strict immigration law, SB 1718, has led to labor shortages, particularly in agriculture, and is projected to cost the state economy up to $12.6 billion in its first year.

Discriminatory policies not only undermine our values but also harm our economy.

Michigan should learn from Florida's experience and reject such harmful legislation. We must stand up against discrimination in all its forms — especially when it’s dressed up as policy.

Part 2: This #AANHPIHeritageMonth, I’m proud to highlight the leadership of the Asian American legislators that I currently serve with in the Michigan Legislature: Majority Floor Leader Senator Sam Singh, Senator Stephanie Chang, and Democratic Leader Rep. Ranjeev Puri.

Each of them brings powerful voices, lived experiences, and a deep commitment to championing policies that strengthen our communities.

Grateful to serve alongside them as we continue to make history—together.
