HAZEL PARK, Mich., March 31, 2026 — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against a Colorado law that bans conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ individuals. The 8-1 decision was based on free speech concerns that the law censored speech based on a viewpoint, as Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the majority opinion. Conversion therapy is a widely discredited practice and many states have laws on the books protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from the harmful practice. In the past, the Supreme Court has allowed previous anti-conversion therapy laws to stay in place.

In response to the ruling, state Rep. Mike McFall (D-Hazel Park) released the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision is deeply disappointing and puts young people at greater risk. Conversion therapy is malpractice and consumer fraud, and every major medical organization agrees it is harmful and unethical. This ruling does not change those facts. What it does is makes it harder for states to protect LGBTQ+ youth from dangerous practices. That’s unacceptable.

“Conversion therapy does not strengthen families; it tears them apart. It significantly increases the risk of suicide among those subjected to the harmful and discredited practice. It replaces trust with shame and isolates young people when they need support the most. I will continue fighting to ensure every young person in Michigan is treated with dignity. Michigan must continue to stand on the side of science and compassion.”
