Yesterday, Berkley Public Safety Chief Matt Koehn and I attended the legislature’s 9/11 ceremony. Together we remembered the countless innocent lives lost as well as those of the first responders who fought valiantly to save them. Ceremonies like this one are a reminder of the ongoing cost that so many people continue to pay, the list of victims continues to grow as survivors succumb to illnesses related to toxic exposure from that fateful day. I’m proud to stand with our community’s first responders knowing that they are ready to help, whatever crises may arise. ...

Happy Labor Day! Today we celebrate the union victories that brought us the 8‑hour workday, the 40‑hour work week, and the promise of a weekend to rest and recharge. Workers practiced solidarity, got organized, and fought tooth and nail for every inch of those freedoms that we enjoy. The role of organized labor remains just as important today in securing fair wages, safe workplaces, and dignity on the job. ...

Heart disease kills more Michiganders than anything else, and in parts of Detroit some residents are nearly twice as likely to die from it.
I am proud to have helped launch the HEART Initiative, a multi-year public health collaboration driven by Meharry School of Public Health and Michigan healthcare partners, alongside regional/local leaders from the community, to help tackle cardiovascular disease.
Together we can help Michiganders live longer, healthier, more vibrant lives.

Today I stood with my colleagues as we introduced the Primary Care Transformation Package. This package would increase access to primary care, helping Michiganders protect their health before worsening health conditions put them in the emergency room. Together we can build a state where primary care is accessible and inexpensive, shifting the burden away from our struggling emergency rooms and improving health outcomes across Michigan. ...

Michigan should not be lending our highways to federal surveillance. That is why I signed on to a letter calling for MDOT to cancel its agreement with federal law enforcement allowing surveillance of state highways.
We knew that when Donald Trump was elected again in 2024 that he would bring with him lawlessness, incompetence, and corruption. It is the duty of state governments to protect our residents from the weaponization of our federal government by the president against his perceived political opponents.
I have said since the beginning of this administration that I am prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that the president cannot abuse his influence over the disbursement of funds or order his personal paramilitary force to interfere in our state in retribution for Michigan voting against him in 2020. He has never stopped relitigating that election, and he has never stopped acting on it. That promise stands.
Whatever the goals of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency were at its formation just over two decades ago, it is overwhelmingly clear that the agency has gone rogue. From killing legal residents and citizens alike in cold blood with seeming impunity to harassing civilians and detaining the wrong targets, it is crucial for elected officials from Congress down to the local level to ask themselves what is within their capacity to do to rein in ICE.
Whatever the merits of license plate readers, we cannot allow them to be used for politically motivated ends, and this administration could not make it more clear that it will use every single tool at its disposal to target its political opponents. Michigan must remove this tool.
Thank you, State Representative Emily Dievendorf, for leading the way on this letter. I look forward to continuing to work together to keep Michigan safe.
