This event focused on continued efforts to lower costs and reduce taxes for Michiganders. Legislation became law earlier this year to expand the Working Families Tax Credit and roll back the retirement tax. Last year, during the 2022 tax season, the 6% EITC only provided Michiganders with an average refund of $154, but with expansion of EITC to 30% of the federal credit — legislation Shannon introduced — refunds are averaging $618 per recipient. Working families in House District 58 get an average boost of $739 from the tax credit expansion, and $4.6 million will be returned to the local economy. The repeal of the retirement tax will bring over 500,000 households statewide an average of $1,000 in tax relief every year.

Brad Paquette (R-Niles), introduced House bills 5165-6 as part of a bipartisan package to help uplift teachers in communities who go above and beyond for their students, on Thursday, October 24, 2019. The package would create the ‘Made a Difference Teacher Fund’, which Michigan residents could voluntarily contribute to when filing their annual tax returns. Residents would also be able to nominate a teacher that made a difference in their lives or the lives of others to receive a monetary award from the fund.
