Victory in Europe Day:

Last week, I introduced a bill to forever commemorate May 8 as Victory in Europe Day in Michigan. Last Thursday marked the 80th anniversary of the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. Victory in Europe Day celebrates the end of World War II in the European theater and honors the victory of America and our Allies over fascist forces, tyranny, genocide and aggression.

“Gulf of America” Resolution:

On Wednesday, Michigan House Republicans passed a resolution urging state and local governments in Michigan to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in all official communications and references. The Republican majority thinks there’s plenty of time to rename faraway bodies of water, but I believe we should talk about what matters most to Michiganders: protecting free school lunches, decreasing the cost of prescription meds, ending medical debt and protecting workers’ paychecks.

Upcoming Virtual Town Hall:

Join me next Monday, May 19, right here on my Facebook page for a virtual town hall. I will be going live on Facebook at 7 p.m. to give an update on what’s been happening in Lansing, let you know where to find me at upcoming community events in House District 80 and answer your questions. Coffee Hour:

Thank you to everyone who stopped by my coffee hour at Moka Roots last Monday! I enjoyed the meaningful conversation on topics ranging from the state budget to earned paid sick time to the best way to influence politics. I heard great ideas on how to continue to be an advocate for District 80.

If you weren’t able to join us, we will continue to host coffee hours to keep you updated on what’s going on at the Capitol and in House District 80. Check back on our social media often to stay up to date on our upcoming events!

Workers Memorial Day Press Conference:

Last Monday, April 28th was Workers Memorial Day, when we pause to honor the lives of every worker lost to unsafe conditions, preventable accidents, and the failures of the systems meant to protect them. I marked the day with a virtual press conference announcing the Workplace Safety legislative package.

My bill in this package increases accountability and workplace protections for children. It’s about sending a clear message that cutting corners with our children’s safety is not just a regulatory issue, it’s a criminal one. Specifically, it aims to increase the criminal penalties for employers who violate the Youth Employment Standards Act, especially in cases where a child is killed or suffers great bodily injury, or when an employer has a record of repeat violations. Let’s make sure Workers Memorial Day is not just a moment of remembrance, but a catalyst for real change.

House Joint Resolution B:

On Thursday, I voted NO on House Joint Resolution B, which would require Michiganders to show documented proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or passport, in order to vote. Noncitizen voting is incredibly rare and not a widespread issue across Michigan or the United States. This action sought by Republicans to prevent a handful of non-citizen votes that may slip through the cracks could stop hundreds of thousands of Americans from exercising their constitutional right to vote. I will continue to fight to make sure your fundamental right is not taken away.
