The Flint Sit-Down Strike was resolved 88 years ago today, but the fight for workers rights continues. Join me in remembering the brave auto workers whose courage helped pave the way for better labor protections in Michigan.

The Team and I are starting a new weekly update called “Last Week Today,” where we’ll be giving some brief news on what’s happening in the capitol and here in District 80. Here’s what happened last week:

Senate Lawsuit: The Michigan Senate has filed a lawsuit against Republican Speaker Matt Hall for not sending nine passed bills to Gov. Whitmer’s desk, which contradicts normal bill presentation procedure. Among these bills, HB 4665-4667 would give state police employees better retirement options, and HB 6058 would ensure fair employer contributions to public employee healthcare. It’s important for lawmakers to uphold the constitution and work in the best interest of Michigan residents.

Budget Presentation: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer proposed an $83.5 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year, with key investments in education, housing, job training, and environmental protections. Highlights include expanded support for K-12 schools, mental health services and electric vehicle infrastructure. This plan reflects the governor’s commitment to making Michigan more affordable and sustainable for all. I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass a bipartisan budget that prioritizes investments in our people, and infrastructure.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day: As we look back on National Girls and Women in Sports Day, I’m reminded of the incredible dedication and strength of my two daughters, who once competed in swimming and water polo. Though they have moved on from competitive sports, the lessons they learned and the resilience they built continue to shape them today. It’s a reminder of the importance of supporting women in athletics and ensuring that every young girl has the opportunity to pursue her dreams. Let’s keep celebrating the trailblazers who’ve broken barriers and empowering the next generation of athletes!

Defending Democracy: Last week's 50501 movement protests in Lansing and across the country highlighted concerns about various policies and their impact on communities. The nationwide protest served as a call for action in response to recent issues from trade wars to the federal freeze on payments to vital programs that support people. Across the state, individuals are pushing for a stable and equitable future, with policies that focus on supporting communities. It’s crucial that all voices are considered as we strive for solutions that benefit both Michigan residents and Americans as a whole. Let’s continue to speak out and stand together in defense of democracy.

As always, if you have any concerns or are looking for help, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Your standing in the way of democracy, spending money like a bunch of drunken sailors, whitmer policies no better than her Covid response putting people in homes that killed many

Thank you for putting this out, Phil. It helps us stay in the loop.

Thanks Phil, for this update. Our democracy is important, and I’m glad to hear that someone is listening to our concerns

Happy National Girls and Women in Sports Day! I'm so glad my daughters -- through swimming and waterpolo -- had the opportunity to play, compete, set goals, challenge themselves, try, fail, excel, be teammates, grow, get confident, and learn they are powerful! ... See MoreSee Less

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. We remember the over 11 million civilians murdered by German and other fascists from 1933-1945, including 6 million Jews killed in a systemic policy of genocide.
