Dear Neighbor,

While we formally observed Veterans Day on Tuesday, our veterans deserve more than recognition — they deserve real action from our state. That’s why I recently cosponsored a comprehensive bill package to add additional support for our veterans, active-duty service members and their families here in Grand Rapids and across the state.

From mental health care and housing to tax relief and the transition to civilian life, our commitment to those who serve must be demonstrated through policies that improve the lives of our veterans.

An image of the United States flag blowing in the wind in front of greenery. Text overlaid reads "House Democrats' Supporting and Protecting Michigan Veterans legislative package supports veterans today and every day."

The “Supporting and Protecting Michigan Veterans” legislative package…

  • Expands statewide outreach for veteran mental health and suicide prevention, including a mental health transition program for separating service members.
  • Works to solve veteran homelessness by creating an Office of Veterans Homelessness with annual legislative reporting requirements.
  • Supports disabled veteran businesses by increasing the goal for the value of state contracts for disabled veteran businesses from 10% to 15
  • Expands the Veterans Trust Fund eligibility to include peacetime veterans and ensures this funding is solely used for veterans emergency grants.
  • Recognizes and compensates veterans by creating an Iraq and Afghanistan Recognition Certificate and expanding eligibility under the Vietnam Veteran Era Bonus Act.
  • And more.

I will continue working to bring home policy wins for our community and preserving state services for our Michigan veterans. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to my office by phone at (517) 373-0476 or email at [email protected]. And follow me on social media for the most up-to-date information.

Yours in service,
