I was fortunate to speak at this morning’s Memorial Day ceremony in Harper Woods. This was my speech. (Many thanks to my friend Marty Eddy, Michigan Coordinator, National League of POW/MIA Families.)
Today, we honor and remember Harper Woods military service members who died of wounds of war on battlegrounds or after returning home to their loved ones and their community, and those who await a homecoming.
We honor PFC Michael John Cromie, a 1967 graduate of Harper Woods High School, killed in action in 1968. And Lt. Corporal Paul David Mannerow, killed in action. PFC Joseph Clerman Wiar, Jr., killed in action.
We remember Private First Class Barry Frank Andersen, United States Marine Corps, who died in 1965 with several other members of his platoon when their Amtrac (amphibious tractor) sank in the coastal waters of Vietnam while on a mission to sweep local villages for enemy presence. He is buried in Cadillac Memorial Gardens East.
We honor and remember Private First Class John Joseph Schultz Jr, U.S. Marine Corps, who was among 12 members of a squad killed in an enemy ambush in Vietnam in 1966. PFC Schultz, the son of John J Schultz Jr and Stephanie F Schultz, was just 19 years old when he died. He is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
There is another group to whom we pay tribute. A unique group. A group represented by the black and white flag you sometimes see displayed with
the U.S. flag: the POW/MIA flag. That group is our nation’s “unreturned veterans.” Prisoners of war and those missing in action. In addition to the familiar logo on the POW/MIA flag, you often see these words: You Are Not Forgotten. To many, that means NEVER GIVE UP. Never give up on the POW/MIA accounting mission: to obtain the release and return of all prisoners, the repatriation of remains of men and one woman not yet recovered who died while serving our nation.
Many of you know of someone who died while serving our nation. Or veterans who died after returning home. Almost 1,600 service members remain missing, 48 of them from Michigan.
As we observe Memorial Day 2025, We will not let them be forgotten. Be their voice. Tell their stories. Teach new generations the true meaning of Memorial Day.
