DELTA TWP., Mich., Sept. 16, 2026 — Today, state Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Twp.) and the Eaton County Controller’s Office announced that Eaton County property owners who were issued assessments for the Bank Intercounty Drain Project will see relief from a $2.5 million state grant come back to them as soon as the end of the year. Witwer secured the grant through the Michigan Department of Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), as part of her continued efforts to provide relief to Eaton County homeowners from the $60 million project. Due to the grant, affected property owners will be receiving reassessments by mail notifying whether they will receive a credit on their 2026 Winter Tax Bill or a partial refund, depending on whether the property owner has already paid their original assessment in full.

“I am grateful to the continued work of Eaton County and EGLE officials in helping to get this funding secured to provide direct financial support to Eaton County homeowners and their families,” Witwer said. “The costs of this project have been a large and often unmanageable burden on Eaton County property owners who have done everything right to make a home for themselves here. I am happy to bring home a semblance of relief to them, and I will continue to pursue funding to offset the costs of this project.”

Witwer also secured an additional $2 million to further offset the costs of construction for the Bank Intercounty Drain Project in the FY2026-27 state budget. Property owners affected by the project can expect to receive more information next year regarding how this additional funding will be refunded or credited to them.

“As residents receive their reassessments, I encourage those with questions or in need of clarification to reach out to my office for support,” Witwer continued. “At the core of this issue is a lack of transparency surrounding the drain petitioning and assessment process, which is why I have also recently introduced legislation to modernize Michigan’s drain code, make the outcomes of petitioning a drain commissioner clear to residents and lower the costs of construction.”
