A recent executive order calls for cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the federal agency that provides support for libraries and museums nationwide. IMLS is the agency that awarded us the National Medal, the nation's highest honor for libraries, in 2010. The West Bloomfield Library does not currently receive direct funding from IMLS; however, this decision would impact patrons through reduced funding to the Library of Michigan.
If these cuts move forward, some of the services at risk include:
📚 Interlibrary loan through MeLCat
🔍 Access to statewide research databases used by school, academic, and public libraries
🎓 Professional development opportunities for library staff across Michigan
We are closely monitoring the situation and will share updates as needed. You can read more about the potential impact to Michigan services here: loom.ly/xcVBWNU
For questions, reach out to Executive Library Director Cathy Russ at director@wblib.org.

So happy to watch the federal government cutting our tax dollars out of programs in order to reduce the tax burden on its citizens.
