Free speech is the bedrock of our democracy. I stand with colleagues across Michigan in condemning the recent detention and threatened deportation of Mahmoud Khalil. As a lawful permanent resident being denied due process rights and detained without evidence or any assertion of breaking the law, the attack on his freedom is a threat against anyone who chooses to exercise their right to speak.

Consistent with the FDA's directive from April of 2023 under the Biden Administration, effective yesterday, March 31st, 2025, manufacturers of opioid analgesics dispensed in outpatient settings must make prepaid mail-back envelopes available to outpatient pharmacies and other dispensers as an additional opioid disposal option for patients. This simple, but deeply impactful change will increase protections against opioid dependency, accidental exposure, and overdoses.

Michigan schools - including Northville Public Schools - lost millions in promised funding after the Trump administration retroactively changed deadlines. Enough with the political games; our kids’ futures shouldn’t be collateral damage. It’s time to invest in them, not rip away resources they need for a safe & healthy environment to learn.

House Republicans passed a budget to take health care away from 2.7 million Michiganders, cut 25% in funding for K-12 education, get rid of school meals for kids, eliminate suicide prevention funding for veterans, and zero out funding for higher ed and community colleges. While Republicans are doing all they can to divide people and cut the things people rely on most, House Democrats are working to lower your costs and bring people together.

Washington's chaos is hitting here in Michigan. DOGE is closing the US Fish & Wildlife office right here in Ann Arbor, a direct attack on local conservation and environmental protections. This isn't some distant political game; it's the Trump/Musk administration agenda dismantling protections for our Huron River, our parks, and the wildlife we cherish.
