Yesterday, I put forth an amendment to restore funding to the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, as House Republicans passed their proposed budget, which includes a 63% funding cut to these public universities. If we want to compete and create opportunity, we must invest in our kids, our schools, and our future. Not dismantle what makes us strong. ... See MoreSee Less

On Tuesday night, I had the honor of attending the 2026 Livingston County Veteran and Auxiliary Member of the Year Banquet at the American Legion Devereaux Post 141 in Howell.
It was a meaningful evening recognizing individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to our country and continued dedication to supporting the veteran community. Congratulations to Don Lang, Veteran of the Year, and to Sheryl Pitt, Auxiliary Member of the Year.
Sheryl, a constituent of House District 48, has supported veterans through her work with the Pinckney American Legion Auxiliary. She has organized fundraisers raising over $10,000 annually for veteran programs, supported disaster relief efforts, contributed to service dog training, and helped maintain veteran memorials. She is deeply involved in her community, from organizing blood drives to volunteering at events that honor and support those who have served.
Don Lang, a U.S. Army veteran who served from 1963 to 1973 as a codebreaker and intelligence analyst, including service in Vietnam and Germany, continues to give back through his leadership and mentorship in the veteran community and programs that support young people.
Thank you to the Livingston County Veterans Council and the American Legion for hosting this event and for all the work you do to honor and support our veterans!

Today, I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from Gift of Life Michigan, the state’s federally designated organ and tissue recovery program. We had a meaningful conversation about the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation, and the life-saving impact it has for individuals and families across Michigan.
I also appreciated the chance to connect with Jeff Patierno, a District 48 constituent, who was in Lansing as part of Gift of Life Michigan’s Advocacy Day to share his perspective and help raise awareness.
Thank you to Gift of Life Michigan for the important work you do every day to support donors, recipients, and families throughout our state.

April marks Arab American Heritage Month, which is a time to recognize and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Arab Americans across our country and here in Michigan. I am proud to have in my district the Muslim Community Center of Ann Arbor, and have enjoyed Iftar on more than one occasion at the Islamic Center. Having lived in Cairo, Egypt, in my former life as a journalist, I saw firsthand the wonders of Ramadan, which I wrote about in the New York Times long ago!
Michigan is home to one of the largest Arab American populations in the nation, with vibrant communities in places like Dearborn (home to the Arab American National Museum!), Ann Arbor, and across Southeast Michigan. In our region, Arab Americans are small business owners, educators, health care professionals, and community leaders who play a vital role in strengthening our local economy and enriching our communities.
This month is an opportunity to celebrate those contributions, uplift Arab American voices, and reflect on the diversity that makes our state stronger. I’m grateful for the many ways Arab American communities continue to shape and support Michigan’s future!

I had the opportunity to meet this week with leaders and students from Jackson College and Washtenaw Community College to discuss community college priorities and their impact on students and employers in our region.
Our conversation focused on key issues like affordability and preparing students for in-demand careers. Community colleges play a vital role in building strong talent pipelines, supporting local education, and creating pathways to opportunity for students of all backgrounds.
I appreciated hearing directly from students about their experiences and from college leaders about how we can continue to strengthen these programs and support student success. Thank you to everyone at Jackson College for the thoughtful discussion and for the important work you do every day!

April is Volunteer Month in Michigan, and there are incredible opportunities across our state to give back and make a difference.
Through Global Youth Service Days (April 24–26), the Michigan Community Service Commission is supporting volunteer projects across the state that will engage thousands of volunteers, especially young people, in service that strengthens our communities.
These projects include:
- Community clean-ups and beautification
- Assembling care packages for residents in need
- Supporting education and youth initiatives
Whether it’s helping a neighbor, volunteering with a local organization, or joining a community project, even a small act of service can make a big impact. To find opportunities near you, visit: Michigan.gov/volunteer or volunteermichigan.org
Let’s take time this month to give back and strengthen our communities together.

Last night, at THE pARTY—-Creative Washtenaw’s signature benefit event celebrating the arts + creative industries in Washtenaw County—- I had the privilege of presenting state tributes to the awardees!
The Creative Washtenaw Medals for Arts, Sciences & Humanities honor and celebrate the extraordinary achievements of those in Washtenaw County who advance and increase awareness of the arts + creative industries in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and our many vibrant Washtenaw County communities. Medalists make their mark through their accomplishments, leadership and investment of time, talent and resources thus setting the standard for excellence and serving as the example for others to follow. It was particularly special for me to give a tribute to Judy and Don Rumelhart, dear friends of my family who are devoted supporters of the arts and the community.

Protecting the Right to Vote:
Right now, Michigan has some of the safest and most secure elections in the country, backed by audits, strong local administration, and clear safeguards - and that's something I'm proud of.
Recently introduced legislation, House Bill 4765, would add new requirements that could make it harder for eligible Michiganders to register and vote. It’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote, and instances of this happening are rare. Instead of strengthening election security, proposals like this, which would force voters to pay for expensive documents like passports, risk creating new barriers that could make it more difficult for seniors, married women, military families, and others to participate in voting.
Voting is a fundamental right. I remain committed to protecting access to the ballot and ensuring that every eligible Michigander can make their voice heard.
