Last night, I attended the Pathways to Home dinner hosted by the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County. Ari Weinzweig, the co-founder of Zingerman’s, spoke eloquently on a topic titled, “Dignity for All: Because Everyone Deserves a Place to Call Home.’” I learned all about their Recuperative Care Program to help those with nowhere to go following a hospital stay. This past year, the Delonis Center has served 51 clients through the program. ... See MoreSee Less

Last night, it was so inspiring to attend the graduation of eight adult graduates who earned their GED certificates, realizing it is never too late to learn. It was a celebration of perseverance and transformation as many of these students have overcome substantial barriers to earn their credentials and prepare to be in our workforce. I so enjoyed seeing how proud the families were of their graduates. Thank you to Ted Kroll, Director of Adult and Alternative Education, with the Livingston Educational Service Agency and Superintendent Mike Hubert for the life long work you do helping educate our community. ... Such fun to be part of a surprise retirement party yesterday at the Michigan League of Conservation Voters for David Fair, the News Director at WEMU 89.1, who will be stepping down at the end of the month. As a former journalist, I have such respect for Fair, who has been at WEMU since 1994. Over the years, he was the driving force behind many award-winning programs, including First Friday Focus on the Environment, which I had the honor of being a guest on earlier this year. The pleasure was all mine to be on the other side of questioning with such a great journalist. Great tributes were delivered from Lisa Wozniak, CEO and President of MLCV, and former board members Lana Pollack and Janus Bobrin before Fair gave some inspiring parting remarks. ... It’s hard to remember our three children this young, particularly when they are now adults. But one thing I will never forget is how wonderful a father Daniel Rivkin has always been to our kids who had to endure many moves mostly for his career (just saying!) But he always made hard moments better with humor and good moments better with gratitude. Here’s to all the fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and father figures out there who put in the hard work of raising children. Happy Father’s Day! ... See MoreSee Less

Tonight, I attended “Silence the Violence,” an annual event at Saint Aidan’s Episcopal Church in my district in Ann Arbor. Alongside other community leaders (including Rep. Debbie Dingell and Felicia Brabec for State Senate), we read the names aloud of every individual lost to gun violence in Washtenaw County since 2008. Surrounded by families who have had their loved ones stolen from them by gun violence— whether it was suicide, homicide, or an accident—we grieved together on this night and vowed to keep working for better laws to prevent so many unnecessary deaths in our state and country. ... Today, alongside State Senator Lana Theis and Congressman Tom Barrett, I attended a USA 250 Commemoration at Hamburg Township. It was a beautiful ceremony with the highlight being the sealing of a time capsule that will be reopened in 25 years. Just FYI, there is still room in it if anyone has ideas for something they would like to add to it. Just take it to the Hamburg Township office (they have to approve your item) but what fun to get something in it! Thank you for organizing this Supervisor Jason Negri! Sorry I could not stay to see won the Apple pie competition. They all looked delicious! ... See MoreSee Less

On Tuesday, I introduced House Bill 6101, which would cap the copay on a 30-day supply of insulin to $35 in Michigan.
Too many Michigan families are forced to choose between paying for insulin and paying for other necessities. For people living with diabetes, skipping or rationing insulin can have devastating consequences. No one should have to ration life-saving medication because of its cost, and this bill would help ensure that people can afford the care and meds they need. By capping copays, we can help ensure that Michiganders have the ability to manage their health without worrying that a trip to the pharmacy will break the bank.
