Today, I had an incredible tour of the For Kids' Sake Early Learning Centers and the For Kids' Sake - Trailside in Pinckney. Julie Amy gave me a tour of both early learning centers and I can’t begin to tell you how much I learned in just one hour. My three kids were in daycare, but that was ages ago, so it was wonderful to see the amazing ways that the children are cared for and educated today. I saw infants, toddlers, pre-k, and now older kids in the summer program. I have never seen so many little ones napping peacefully in one room curled up on their cozy mats after a morning of activities.

And then, I had the privilege of seeing the older kids playing for the first time in a new outdoor space that has a sand pit, mud kitchen and soon-to-be herb garden. (With permission from Julie, I’m sharing some photos.)

But I also learned the major challenges that barely keep these small daycare businesses afloat. The cost of training and maintaining good staff and teachers, keeping facilities in top shape, and educating young children is such a worthy task, but it is also expensive. And parents can only pay so much. We need these early learning centers to keep going so parents can continue working, children can be safe while developing, and communities can grow. But they need our help. I look forward to working on the many issues she brought up to me today and helping to make supporting daycare a priority in our state.

Yesterday, I went on a fantastic, incredibly educational, field tour with our Michigan Food & Farm Caucus. Hosted by Senator Sue Shink, the State Innovation Exchange, and the ASPCA, it provided myself, and a number of other state reps, with an opportunity to get out and meet with MI independent farmers and food producers. We visited the Whitney Farmstead, ten minutes from our house, and learned about their restorative farming practices. They rotate their cattle every day so they simultaneously tend the fields while feeding themselves and eventually their communities. We then visited Argus Farm Stop and learned how they support growers and producers in the region by being a permanent farmer’s market and working collaboratively with everyone to ensure their goods sell well!

We also discussed with MDARD Director Tim Boring how best to engage with advocates and farmers on rural and agricultural issues and strategized on how to best center farmer voices in MI policymaking. All in all, a great day.

It was great to be on a panel this morning at the Jackson Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast with Senator Sue Shink, 14th District; State Rep. Sarah Lightner, 45th District, and State Representative Kathy Schmaltz, 46th District. Matt Pryziazny, from FOX 47 News, was a great moderator as we answered questions about how to best strengthen the connection between our state leadership and the Jackson business community.

And MAJOR congrats to both the Jackson and Howell Area Chamber of Commerce for being two of the 11 finalists for the ACCE 2026 Chamber of the Year award, sponsored by GrowthZone. This recognition is one of the chamber industry’s highest honors, celebrating excellence in operations, member service and community leadership.

Last night, I was delighted to attend the 40th anniversary of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Ann Arbor. The signature annual fundraising celebration—JCC Spotlight to Summer—celebrated 40 years of the JCC’s impact, bringing people together across generations through connection, culture, and shared experience. Alongside my fellow Washtenaw delegates, we presented the JCC with a state tribute before the room honored Leslie Bash, the former Executive Director, for her leadership and vision in shaping the JCC into the vibrant community hub it is today.

At a time of increased challenges for Jewish communities, it was a wonderful evening of connection and belonging.

Yesterday, I attended a Clubhouse Michigan Employment celebration in Lansing honoring Donna Coleman from Genesis House Clubhouse, Howell, MI, USA. (I love their spaghetti dinners!) Genesis House, one of Michigan's 40 Clubhouses, is a community center for people living with mental illness. In a Clubhouse, members work together to provide a dynamic and supportive environment and also provide comprehensive assistance with employment. Yesterday, Genesis House celebrated Donna, a member who has worked there for more than 20 years. I was so happy to be there when she accepted the award. ... See MoreSee Less

Last night, my office presented a legislative tribute to Dominic Berkholz to congratulate him on reaching the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, Dominic's final project was to lead the construction of a permanent storage shed for Dexter Unified Sports -- a program that promotes social inclusion by bringing together student-athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. Dominic worked to ensure the athletes have a secure, organized space for their equipment, allowing them to focus on competition and building friendships.

Thank you, Dominic, for your dedication and commitment to our community! We wish you the best of luck at Bowling Green State University in the fall!
