Great news!
I joined my colleagues in sending a letter to both BCBS and Michigan Medicine asking for cooler heads to prevail during this bargaining process. We are glad both sides have found a deal before this escalated further, as the uncertainty for patients was unacceptable, especially in these turbulent times.

We have to do something for the people and I believe State Senator Jeff Irwin has some great solutions listed belowWhy are our energy costs so high?
With gas and diesel, the answer is more obvious. As everybody knew would happen, the war in Iran and associated disruption to oil markets is extremely costly for everybody, except oil companies.
With electricity, the changes are more complicated and gradual. For the last two decades, prices for electricity keep going up and up. Because of changes made in 2014, costs were shifted from industry and to residents. The result: residents are paying 124% more and industry pays only 11% more. Michigan has also been slow to adopt cheaper, homegrown generation sources, making expensive bets on natural gas and nuclear power. Paired with stagnant population and deferred maintenance that couldn't be deferred anymore after the massive outages of 2023, and you have rates that keep going up and up.
"Michigan's average electricity rates over the past two decades have outpaced inflation and increased at higher percentages than the rates in 46 other states."
What can we do about it?
We should take a number of easy actions to ease rate immediately, including:
1) pass the Vitual Power Plant legislation, avoiding the big capital costs that the utilities' shareholders want more of.
2) pass Community Solar legislation, allowing people to invest in cheaper generation. This law is already saving Minnesota ratepayers over $10M/year.
3. pass Sen Hertel's legislation to only allow rate increases once every three years.
