An update on the situation at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility and MDOC as a whole.
Last month, my colleagues and I sent a letter to Michigan Department of Corrections' Director Heidi Washington asking for her resignation due to the deplorable conditions throughout the prison system, especially at WHV. We have been working with advocates to get answers and solutions. I am working to form a workgroup that will address the short-term and long-term systemic conditions in our state prisons.
I need your help if we are going to get this workgroup going. I need everyone reading this to reach out to the Governor's office and ask for real cooperation between the Executive, the Department, Legislators, and advocates for those inside who have the hardest times having their voices heard.
The state of Michigan does not allow for capital punishment, but that means nothing if we continue to allow preventable deaths in our prisons. Our incarcerated family and friends deserve better, and I promise to continue fighting for equity and justice for all.

Today we voted on bills that would require individuals to stay 25 feet away (buffer zone) from first responders after a warning.
I voted NO on House Bills 5574, 5575, and 5576 because, while I recognize and support the need to protect first responders from harassment and interference while performing their duties, these bills raise significant concerns regarding free speech, public accountability, and the ability of residents to observe and document government activity in public spaces.
Recent events in Minnesota and other states have highlighted the risks associated with granting expanded authority in situations involving federal law enforcement officers who may not be adequately trained in local community engagement or de-escalation practices. As communities across the country have witnessed controversial deployments of federal officers and ongoing questions regarding transparency and accountability, it would be irresponsible to enact legislation that could put us on track to further restrict public oversight. In addition, the efforts of legal observers to document police interactions has proven helpful in providing accountability in cases of police misconduct and brutality and are protected by the United States Constitution.
In absence of any meaningful policy changes to address police accountability, these bills serve to make dangerous situations even more dangerous for our most vulnerable neighbors. Both police officers and those they serve are safer when oversight is unobstructed and routes to accountability are protected. Regardless, these bills are likely unconstitutional.
Today, Democrats offered an amendment to restrict the impact of these bills to EMS and firefighters. That amendment was defeated.
We can and should protect first responders without undermining constitutional rights or limiting the public's ability to hold government actors accountable. Unfortunately these bills did not pass that essential test.

Rx Kids is expanding, again, and to over 20 more communities to boot! Its success is proof that investing in families, babies and communities is always a good idea. When we invest in parents, we are building a better future for everyone!

Great news!
I joined my colleagues in sending a letter to both BCBS and Michigan Medicine asking for cooler heads to prevail during this bargaining process. We are glad both sides have found a deal before this escalated further, as the uncertainty for patients was unacceptable, especially in these turbulent times.
