I testified before the House Criminal Justice Committee as they voted out my bill, HB 5698, that requires the Department of Corrections to screen inmates within 7 days after entering a correctional facility and put together a pre-release plan before they are released.
The bill was brought to me by my friend, the Founder and Director of Silent Cry Inc., Shawanna Vaughn. The mental health of those who are formerly and currently incarcerated is severely tested.

I testified before the Committee on Families, Children and Seniors in support of my Tobacco Free Kids legislation, of which I am the lead bill sponsor in the House. The package seeks to decriminalize youth for purchasing, using and possessing tobacco/nicotine products; requiring tobacco retailers to be licensed just like liquor retailers; and preventing the sale of highly addictive flavored tobacco/nicotine products.
I was joined by Youth Advocate Michael Smith, who testified that menthol, candy flavored and other flavored tobacco/nicotine products, especially vapes, makes it easy to start smoking, but extremely difficult to quit.

You have all my respect Rep. Young. But are you fully informed? CDC surveys show teen nicotine vaping dropped 70% over the past five years to a 10-year low. They also show 17.2 million American ADULTS use this gizmos now, and almost all of them use 'flavored' vapes. Prohibiting 'flavors' will put millions of Michigan adults at risk of relapsing to deadly cigarettes that KILL 50% of all users. This may be unwise, comparable to denying penicillin to 400 men who had syphilis from 1947-1972. Prohibitions ALWAYS have unintended consequences. I don't think anyone has fully thought this through. FYI: I'm a Michigander. U of M grad. Taught Healthcare Ethics to med students at Howard University for several years. Ask your staff to #FactCheck the numbers in this graph. They are correct. On request, I would be happy to share links to the CDC website where these surveys live. I don't make this stuff up. EVERYTHING in this graph is good news for public health. I am disgusted that this situation is being portrayed, incorrectly, as a public health "crisis."
Love is definitely the work
Nice!
We took a major step forward for Michigan workers and families. We passed bills to improve unemployment benefits — this is 20+ years overdue. These changes will give Michiganders the breathing room they need during tough times. Our job as legislators is to ensure that state government works for everyone — including individuals and families facing job loss. ... See MoreSee Less

Thank you Rep Young and all who supported this bill. The unemployment system is a lifeline for those that need it and has needed updating for decades. Happy to see it’s now getting attention!
Thank you for your service!
Thank you Governor Whitmer for signing my bill, House Bill 4128, into law, enacting new safety measures for public spaces by restricting firearm possession in polling places. This legislation demonstrates Michigan's commitment to protecting Michiganders and their right to safe voting locations. #LoveIsTheWork ... See MoreSee Less
