Juneteenth is a reminder that progress takes work and time. I was honored to sponsor legislation, now a law, recognizing Juneteenth every year in our state so that we do not forget the hardships and realities of the past. But freedom isn't just about the past; it's about protecting our rights today. That's why the Michigan Voting Rights Act matters: it’s the next step in the fight to make sure every voice is heard.

As we approach Juneteenth this year, I look back and have a great sense of pride that this legislation was signed into law by Gov Whitmer!Today, we celebrate Juneteenth! Governor Whitmer signed into law my Negro League Baseball Day legislation to be celebrated on May 2nd annually in the state of Michigan.
On this day let us all remember the horrific stain of slavery in the United States. Let’s also honor the legacy of June 19th by committing to continue the fight for equity and justice and reparations for all of our communities.

House Republicans prevented my colleague Representative Jason Morgan from reading his Pride Month resolution on the House Floor. I joined him and other Michigan House Democrats to read it anyway because representation in government matters. I won't stand idly by as Michiganders voices are silenced.

This morning I spoke at a press conference at AFT Michigan which included Dr. Vitti, leadership from AFT AND DFT Local 231 to highlight that fact that the Republican led legislature, yet again will likely not have a budget completed by July 1st…this falls squarely on the shoulders of Speaker Matt Hall and his Republican Caucus members.
Michiganders deserve a budget that is finished on time, our teachers need certainty for classroom planning purposes. House Republicans have had plenty of time and opportunity to work with House Democrats to achieve a full, responsible budget. Republicans simply haven’t had the willingness up to this point to get the work done. Michigan schools, teachers and families don’t deserves this lack of transparency, care and concern for funding of our schools and other public entities.

The week of Juneteenth, I'm reflecting on those who have impacted the history of social justice, like my great-uncle Ron Teasley who helped break barriers during an era of segregation and discrimination. He was one of the oldest living players from the 1930s and 1940s Negro Baseball Leagues until his passing earlier this year. It is in honor of people like him that I was proud to sponsor legislation recognizing May 2 as Negro Leagues Day in Michigan and recognizing the players who shaped our history. I'll always remember him as Uncle Ron, but his legacy continues to inspire the broader ongoing fight for equity, opportunity and inclusion.
