Saturday night was an emotional one for me. We attended a gala to support Garrett's Space, a nonprofit with the mission to create spaces of hope and healing for young people in need. It is named after Garrett, a good friend of our daughter’s who died by suicide. He was a wonderful young man who was struggling and felt isolated in his pain. His parents founded Garrett’s Space, which will soon be a residential facility on acres of beautiful land here in Ann Arbor to try to help others. ... See MoreSee Less

Yesterday, we went on a farm tour in Washtenaw County organized by U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell. We started at HillTop Greenhouse & Farms in Ann Arbor with many Michigan Farm Bureau members where we had a roundtable to hear concerns and answer questions. Workforce/Labor issues and getting the Federal Farm bill done were two of the biggest topics. We then headed to the Gateway Farm in Salem where they grow gorgeous lettuce, herbs, flowers and even figs! The tour ended at Alber Orchard & Cider Mill LLC in Salem. A beautiful, but warm, day to tour farms. A nice bookend to a week that started at the Howell Melon Festival! ... See MoreSee Less

🎉 Dexter Senior Center Ribbon Cutting 🎉
It was an honor to be a part of the ribbon-cutting for the brand-new Dexter Senior Center! After years without a permanent home, this new space at 2740 Baker Rd in Dexter will serve as a welcoming hub for older adults and community groups.
This week, the Senior Center is hosting various events to welcome members into the new building.
🏠 August 18–22, 9 am to 3 pm – Community Open House with programs and services
🎊 Friday, August 22nd, 3 to 6 pm – Special celebration with food, raffles, and fun
I’m proud to have supported this project alongside Rep. Debbie Dingell, Senator Sue Shink, and Representative Carrie Rheingans, and grateful to the many community partners who helped make this incredible new space a reality.

So many events the last few days, including a fantastic event this past Thursday night. The Michigan Environmental Council hosted its 27th annual Milliken Award Celebration at the Rogel Ballroom at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The event brought together advocates, policymakers, and businesses committed to protecting Michigan’s air, water, and the places we love. It also allowed me to meet the night’s special honoree. The beautifully accomplished former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm! ... See MoreSee Less

Since we can’t be in session in Lansing working on the already-tardy state budget until Speaker Hall is willing to work, I decided to take advantage of the lovely weather and introduce myself to constituents yesterday door-knocking in Northfield Township. Thanks State Representative Julie M. Rogers for keeping me company! I also attended the fantastic Sonic Lunch in Ann Arbor, sponsored by Bank of Ann Arbor. A treat, beyond the great jazz band playing, was running into friends and Senator Sue Shink. Sonic Lunch continues for two more Thursday lunch time concerts. Check it out! ... See MoreSee Less
