It is a banner day for Hughes Elementary School!
Today, the United States Education Department recognized Hughes Elementary as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups on assessments. The award winners are selected by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and go through a rigorous process before a final announcement. The award builds on Hughes’ MDE Reward School status in 2022 and 2023.
The National Blue Ribbon Award is an exclusive honor. Hughes is one of 13 Michigan schools, K-12 public and private, to receive the award this year. We are one of 356 schools nationwide to be honored by the U.S. Education Department. Hughes has become one of only three schools in the history of Calhoun County to receive the award in its 42 year history.
This honor belongs to the entire Hughes family. Our staff and students have put in the time and effort to score highly on many state standardized tests. We are also blessed to have so many great families that we have developed relationships with and have supported Hughes over the years. This honor reflects years of work and dedication by everyone.
We are currently working on a Blue Ribbon Celebration Day in October (Date TBA). All Hughes students, teachers, families, and friends, both past and present, are invited to attend this celebration.
We have always prided Hughes Elementary School on being hard-working, motivated, and dependable. We always work to get the best out of our students. In other words, Hughes is blue collar in the best way possible. Today, however, we can also say that we are Blue Ribbon!

Starting Monday, September 16, 2024
The intersection of N. 17th Street/Avenue B will be closed as crews will be working to repair a water main (marked with the blue circle). The water will be shut down and the area marked in red affected, as well as Avenue A between N. 14th and N. 17th Streets.
ADDED AREAS:
All of N. 12th Street from Avenue A to Avenue C
All off Avenue D
N. 16th Street from the dead end to Avenue C
Avenue C to N. 20th Street
Work will begin at 7:00 a.m. and continue until 7:00 p.m. Once repaired there will be a boil water advisory until further notice.

You're a fucking corrupt state legislator who belongs in prison for lying to the cops about a sexual assault committed by one of your campaign donors. Stop wasting my tax dollars pretending to be a meteorologist while getting a taxpayer funded paycheck.
I know everybody’s hot, but not as hot as 4 disabled people in their late 50s and early 60s I found roasting in a rooming house in Battle Creek tonight.
I learned that there are 6 different people in this house paying 750.00 a month, utilities included, for a place to stay.
There is no air conditioning.
There are no fans.
One resident claimed that the windows didn’t open.
There’s a common kitchen, and one - maybe two - bathrooms to share.
I checked out both the first and the second floors.
I’ll see what help I can get through Calhoun County Senior Services tomorrow.
But there are people living in Battle Creek who share bathrooms with strangers, and have nothing but oppressive heat in their homes.
And they get by on $943.00 a month, plus SNAP benefits.

Kim, Since I just discovered these unfortunate people at about 6:45 tonight, I’ll first communicate with Senior Services, and next try Adult Protective Services if Senior Services is limited in what it might do. I’ll call first thing tomorrow morning.

They need Section 8 vouchers. You can't live on SSI without one. Otherwise you end up being preyed on like those people and packed into a rooming house. I know of one other. The conditions are terrible, and they have them just warehoused so they can take their money.
