Now how did Lansing get blamed for something Washington DC did? 😂
Sometimes we don’t realize just how much the federal government affects our daily lives.
With really dramatic changes happening to federal programs like SNAP and Medicaid it’s important to understand what level of government is impacting your life.
We work really hard to fill the gaps at the state level but it’s important to hold the right people accountable! 👀

Our health should never be determined by our ZIP code, income, or the resources available in our neighborhoods.
I had the opportunity to join the Grand Rapids African American Health Institute (GRAAHI) for their 4th Annual Summit to discuss the economic and human impact of health disparities in our communities.
We know that building healthier communities starts with making sure everyone has access to quality healthcare, affordable resources, and the support they need to thrive. That also means making sure our voices are heard and that we're part of the decisions that impact our families and neighborhoods.
Thank you to GRAAHI for bringing community leaders, advocates, and neighbors together to have these important conversations and turn them into meaningful action. There's still work to do, and I'm committed to continuing that work alongside you! 💙

When we support parents, we support stronger families and stronger communities! 💙
I had a great conversation with the members of Parents for Healthy Homes program about the important work they do to bring neighbors together, lift up community voices, and make sure people have a say in decisions that affect their lives.
A special shoutout to all the parents working hard every day to give their children a better future. Parents know what their families need, and it's my job as an elected official to listen and work with them to make sure our community has the tools, resources, and support to succeed.
Thank you for the work you do to bring our community together and make sure every voice is heard!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Let’s use it as a reminder to get informed and remind the people we love! 💞
Early detection matters, and staying informed is one of the best ways we can take care of ourselves and each other. Take a moment to check in with your loved ones and encourage them to stay on top of their health. 💗

This weekend I joined the city of GR and the Willams family to unveil the Donald Williams Sr. Legacy Room at MLK Lodge.
Mr. Donald Williams Sr. was a strong advocate for the lodge and community space where children and families can be.
I was proud to present a special tribute in his memory, celebrating the care he gave to students and our Grand Rapids community. He believed in people and helped them see what was possible, because of his vision this lodge will forever be a staple for us all. 💙

I recently visited DaVita’s Grand Rapids clinic to learn more about how they care for neighbors living with kidney failure.
Many patients need dialysis, a treatment that cleans their blood, several times a week. Getting to those appointments and making time for hours of care can be a challenge for patients and their families.
I appreciate learning about the issues patients navigate and hearing where legislation can improve the process.
Thank you to the team for showing me around and sharing how we can better support our neighbors!

Congratulations to the Hispanic Chamber and everyone who helped bring their vision to life!
I loved celebrating the opening of the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s new home in Roosevelt Park.
This space will help Latino entrepreneurs grow their businesses, connect young people with career opportunities, and bring neighbors together. I’m excited to see the ideas, businesses, and relationships that grow here.

Another exciting investment in District 82! 🚒
In 2023 I worked with Senator Brinks, the City of GR, the Firefighters, and others to secure $35M in funding for two new stations.
At the time we had the longest wait times in Kent County.
This week we cut the ribbon on our 2nd station on Division Ave. What an important investment. We are working to ensure that this part of town is no longer the “forgotten first ward” but a place that thrives.
It’s so meaningful that this station has been dedicated to the Hispanic community that it was built in and we cut the ribbon during Hispanic Heritage Month!
This new fire station means safer neighborhoods, stronger emergency response, and modern facilities for the firefighters who show up for our community every day.
This is what bringing state dollars back home is all about! So many people came together to make this possible, and I’m proud to see this investment become a reality for our Southside community. ❤️
