Hey West Michigan, it’s 616 Day!
When I think about what growing up in the 616 meant to me I think of Millers ice cream, summer reading challenges at GRPL, baseball at King park, trips to the beach, sledding at Mulick, swimming at Garfield, bike rides at McKay park, and skating at Woodland on the weekends.
When you think of the 616 what does it mean to you? Whatever it is let’s keep creating spaces and opportunities for the next generation to create just as many memories!

Dads play such a significant role in our family’s, our communities, and in the shaping of this great nation. We know it’s not easy, but thank you to the fathers who are true examples of what leadership, love, and integrity look like.
You can always tell when a person has been poured into and loved by their parents. My hope is that my work reflects the love and guidance my dad provided. He is, and will always be the greatest man I know. Happy Father’s Day daddy!

It was my pleasure to join Sinas Dramis Law Firm for their Lids for Kids event at Garfield Park. Each year this event brings the community together while providing free helmets and bike safety gear to students. The bonus is helping to raffle off bikes as a surprise to students! As always thanks for allowing me to join in on the fun 😁🚲 ... See MoreSee Less

It was wonderful to catch up with the Detroit Parent Network during their capitol day visit to Lansing! 💙
@dpndetroit empowers parents to become leaders in their children’s education and advocates for change. Their work in literacy, workforce development, and parent training is helping families and futures thrive. They have been working with parents in GR over the last year as well and Im looking forward to seeing the impact.
Thank you for all you do!

HB 5557 requires that community master plans include an analysis of current housing needs and a projection of the type and amount of housing needed over the life of the plan.
This ensures that local communities prioritize housing and recognize it as a fundamental need every resident deserves access to. By planning proactively for a diverse range of housing types, price points, and sufficient supply, we can reduce costs and address the housing shortage.
The goal, as always, is housing for all.

Before state house I was a proud school board member. One of my favorite things to do was visit Gerald R Ford Job Corps center. I would attend the lunches put on by students, their graduations, etc. I was always amazed at the level of excellence these young people performed at.
Now as state representative it’s been my honor to support them at another level- and it’s broken my heart to see what is happening to them now. 112 students in Grand Rapids and 12,000 around the country are being displaced. 15 of our babies locally are facing homelessness. This is not ok, it’s not how you treat people who have dedicated their lives to service.
Job Corps changes lives, changes communities, and has had an immense impact on our country. For weeks I have been meeting with the local team to lay out strategy. Today my office shared this letter signed by 35 of my colleagues.
We will continue to work to save this program, and to create a landing place for our students. Join us!

Visiting Sheldon House to help them kick off their Week of Action was awesome!
It was great to meet members and learn how they are building meaningful lives through the community and work done at the Clubhouse. Their work in community based mental health care is transformational and creates a space where recovery is possible for everyone.
