It was great to join the Michigan Nonprofit Association this week to talk about how nonprofits can work with government. As co-chair of the Michigan Nonprofit Legislative Caucus I know the importance of this partnership first hand.
Nonprofits play a crucial role in strengthening our communities, and our discussion focused on how we, as policymakers, can partner with them to advocate for the work they do during this pivotal time.

Black history is American history—and Black innovation has shaped the world for all of us. Not a day goes by that we don’t use an invention from an African American that makes our lives better- not a single day! This #BlackHistoryMonth, we continue highlighting brilliant Black inventors whose creations have changed everyday life for ALL of us.
From technology to security to gaming, these pioneers transformed industries despite the barriers they faced. Their stories deserve to be known, celebrated, and shared.
We’re excited to continue this series and to remind everyone that Black excellence has always been here. If you’d like a free copy of our digital children’s book featuring these incredible inventors, let us know!

Black History Month is the perfect time to highlight the history that is often left out of our books. African Americans have made TREMENDOUS contributions to the world—innovations that have improved everyday life in for ALL Americans.
As DEI conversations continue, it’s important to remember that we have been adding value for generations, even while being overlooked. It’s important to state just how qualified we have been. I look forward to using this platform as a way to share those truths.
I plan to post about these contributions all month but I’ve also compiled them in a short digital book for children, showcasing these incredible inventions and the brilliant minds behind them. Let us know if you’d like a free copy!

Congratulations 🎊🎈🎉
Max met me at the Capitol on my very first day of service and he’s been here ever since. Helping me to guide good legislation, as well as studying with me to fight against bad policy. I am grateful for the immense dedication he brought to this job and the friendship he’s provided. I’m sad to see him leave but I’m so very proud. Good luck Max! ... See MoreSee Less

Max, The best to you in your next venture, as you truly have a full toolbox to offer!!. It was always a pleasure speaking with you during State Representative Kristian Grant's meet ups in Grand Rapids..
4 of my bills were signed into law this week!
From protecting communities to supporting families, to ensuring justice is fair—this week. Here's what we accomplished together:
🛡️ Hate Crimes Bills (HB 5400 & 5401): Sending a strong message that hate and intolerance have no place in Michigan.
🤰 Maternal Health Expansion (HB 5169-5171): Prioritizing moms and babies by expanding mental health screenings.
🏘️Land Bank Protections (HB4675 & 4679) Ensuring protections so that land banks can continue to work on housing in our communities
Bonus:
⚖️ Sentencing Commission (HB 4173 & 4384): Advancing fairness in our justice system while keeping victims safe. This isn’t my package but I’m very excited to see it make it across the finish line.
Which win are you excited about? Let me know in the comments! 🗣️⬇️

I had the pleasure of attending my first NRF Conference!
This year NRF highlighted the future of retail—from AI innovations to supporting small businesses and sustainability. I also met with legislators from around the country to talk about legislation that helps guide innovation and protect consumers. Excited to bring these ideas back to Michigan and explore how they can help our communities grow!

It was a pleasure having coffee with you.
Today we voted on legislation addressing tipped wages and paid sick leave- two issues that I take very seriously. I want to make sure my constituents- workers and business owners- understand the vote that I took and my hope that we can find a solution that keeps all partners in mind. ... See MoreSee Less
