This morning, thousands of educators, parents, students, and community leaders participated in a national “walk-in” to send a clear message to our government: protect our students and families.
As a mother of four young children in Michigan's public schools, I know firsthand that an attack on our education system is an attack on our families—and we will not stand for it. Yet just two weeks ago, Michigan House Republicans voted to gut $5 billion from our School Aid Fund, while the current presidential administration actively works to dismantle the Department of Education. Michigan relies on $550 million in federal funding to support critical school programs, and if that funding is slashed, our state’s education budget could take a devastating 10% hit.
We should be working to strengthen our schools, not stripping them of the resources that shape the future of our children. At a time when schools are already facing record cuts, we must do everything in our power to ensure fair salaries for teachers, free breakfast and lunch for every child, transportation, full funding for at-risk students, and access to continuing education in career and technical education, and post-secondary opportunities.
I was proud to stand in solidarity today with my children's dedicated teachers, support staff, and administrators. Our children’s future depends on us standing up and fighting for them. I won’t back down.

Bipartisan Support for Macomb Community College: Keeping Our Region Competitive
I’m proud to see support for the 13th House District’s Macomb Community College and the work being done to keep our region competitive when it comes to hosting events. House Bill 4065 is a commonsense move that allows Macomb to get a liquor license for its Expo Center and Student Community Center, making it easier to host conferences, trade shows, and other major events.
Before this bill, the college had to go through a time-consuming process of getting daily permits just to serve alcohol at events. Now, with this change, Macomb can attract more business, bring in more visitors, and support our local economy—all while keeping things fair by purchasing the license at market value.
This is a great example of my colleagues from both sides of the aisle coming together to do the right thing. Supporting our community college means supporting students, businesses, and workers in our region. This move helps ensure Macomb remains a top destination for major events, and I’m glad to see us taking action to make that happen.

Dems, your voices are never going to reach the younger generation with these buttoned-up speeches. You need to invoke emotion during these press conferences - speak from the heart, not from the paper 💙💙💙
This is a disgrace. Just like the SAVE act. Thank you for fighting for us, Michigan Dems!!!!
start making more noise, rattle the cages. explain how registering to vote really works.
March is Reading Month, and I had the privilege of reading to several 3rd grade classrooms in the 13th House District.
I let the students vote on which book they wanted me to read (democracy in action!), and after the story, they had *a lot* of important questions:
✔️ How did I get my job?
✔️ How much do I make?
✔️ Do I like what I do?
✔️ What’s the hardest part?
But the most powerful moment? When I asked *them* what laws they would like to see passed. Their answers reminded me why I fight so hard for our kids every day.
This week, I also had to take unexpected votes on suprise budget bills —including cutting funding for public education. It saddens me that some of my colleagues don’t value public schools the way they should, trying to strip funding from essential programs like the free breakfast and lunch for students program, transportation, and CTE.
Our kids deserve better. They may not be able to vote, but they matter. I made sure to hand out bookmarks with my contact information and told them they could call or email me anytime if they ever needed anything —because their voices matter to me.
These moments make this work worth it. I’ll never stop fighting for our youngest citizens.

Michigan House Republicans sent a clear message to all Michiganders today when they voted to drastically cut the school aid budget (by $5.1 billion) and slashing 92% of the general fund. They are sending a clear message that they do not value your hard earned taxpayer dollars and that they would rather hijack this money and withhold it from departments like DNR, the State Police, the military and VA, HHS (funding that would help pregnant women safely give birth, children, and senior citizens), and EGLE. Republicans do not care about the Great Lakes state. ... See MoreSee Less

Michigan tax payers have no idea this is happening. We are not educated enough on our own state politics. We need to find a way to engage people. This affects all of us, democrat, republican, independent…these are our KIDS and their futures. Thank you for being transparent and trying to get the message out. I hope other representatives are doing the same on their social media!!
My class was in the gallery watching. My class of 10 year olds watched you all shouting at each other and heard shouts of “Bullshit! Bullshit” from your party in disagreement of the bill. After I told them we were in a respectable place of business and they needed to conduct themselves appropriately. Too bad our legislators couldn’t set a better example for them. You all acted like a bunch of children. I am embarrassed for our government. Neither republicans nor democrats acted like adults in that room yesterday. You all need to grow up and start working together to actually do good for the people of Michigan instead of pointing fingers and trying to purposely deceive one another, pushing through legislation without taking time to actually consider the ramifications. No one wins when our legislators do nothing but fight and point fingers.
Hi State Representative Mai Xiong, I asked Bryan 😒 what exactly the bill was and he of course gave a lengthy response. Since we know republicans like to spin things their way, can you pick apart his response and let me know what’s true and what isn’t? Because he’s making it sound like it was a “just in case” bill but I know well enough not to trust that. Here is what he said: Melissa Perron I sure can! Buckle up.... Republicans unanimously supported a bipartisan Shutdown Prevention Plan. This is not the full budget. Since November, Democrats primarily in the senate have been talking about a government shutdown, assuming an agreement wouldn't be reached between the chambers and the governor by September 30th. As a result, House Republicans decided it would be prudent to pass a supplemental budget as a fail safe for a potential breakdown in negotiations on the budget. The bi-partisan supplemental that is now in the hands of the Senate is enough to fund the necessities of our government to ensure there isn't a shutdown while we negotiate the final budget. It also ensures education, public safety, and our veterans can't be used as pawns by either party in negotiations.
Honored to join the artists, families, and Charlie Langton this evening in support of young artists on the autism spectrum.
This incredible charity, started by 18 year old, Angelina Kou, raises funds for art therapy programs, empowering children with ASD and their families through creativity and expression.
Grateful to be part of such a meaningful cause!
