Some updates on what to expect this week in the Michigan House regarding the School Aid Fund Budget/July 1 deadline, potential cuts from the federal government’s “Big Beautiful Bill” and what impact that would have on our veterans. ... See MoreSee Less

Recently, I had the opportunity to share my refugee story alongside other immigrants who came to the United States, leaving behind so much, fleeing war and persecution, while bringing hope and determination with us.

The stories we shared are marked by hard work, resilience, and moments of extreme hardship. Our families faced uncertainty most can’t imagine. And yet, we remain deeply grateful.

When immigrants are given the chance to succeed—through support, services, and opportunity —they are able to give back tenfold.

As survivors and hardworkers, immigrants and refugees often take on low-wage, low-paying and dangerous jobs that many Americans often do not want to fill, build businesses, while contributing billions to the economy, pay millions of dollars in taxes, and strengthen the very fabric of our culture and communities.

This shared experience was a powerful reminder of how important it is to listen, to learn, and to honor the journeys that shape our communities.

As State Representative, I’m proud to be in a position where I can not only uplift these stories with others —but also work to create policies that are welcoming to immigrants and rooted in economic reality.

Thank you Michigan ethnic commissions, including the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission for organizing this important event!

Going to show up everyday and make sure we keep them accountable to doing their part. Passing a budget before September 30th is a huge priority and we are working hard to meet that deadline! In addition, July 1 is an important deadline for schools, and we have to get through that budget first! #Michigan #MILeg #schools #education #budget #budgetcuts ... See MoreSee Less

When local law enforcement agencies sign 287(g) Agreements with the Immigration & Customs Enforcement agency, it directly places the cost of federal immigration enforcement onto local taxpayers. Cities and counties take on the liability, legal fees, and added responsibilities—driving up costs that can lead to higher property taxes. Our communities shouldn’t foot the bill for ICE. ... Another day in the Michigan Legislature under Speaker Matt Hall’s House Republicans, what could possibly go wrong? #michigan #mileg #immigration #ice ... See MoreSee Less

Another day at work:

Michigan House Republicans passed House Resolution 128 to encourage local law enforcement agencies and county sheriffs to enter into “287(g) Agreements” with ICE.

Representative Josh Schriver, who is a known conspiracy theorist and has publicly made racist remarks in the past, sponsored the Resolution and was making a Floor Speech. The speech was not directly related to the Resolution itself, accusing “illegal immigrants” of “fentanyl trafficking, document fraud, labor exploitation, and cultural erosion,” among other things, like “riots” and protests in L.A.

The Democratic Minority Floor Leader Rep. John Fitzgerald was trying to make a procedural call “point of order” to point this out, and the Speaker Pro Tem refused to acknowledge him.
