Last night, I had the honor of presenting a special tribute on behalf of the State of Michigan to Rosemary Otzman in recognition of her decades of service to Belleville, Van Buren Township, Sumpter Township, and the surrounding community.
For more than 30 years, Rosemary helped document and preserve the history of the people, events, decisions, and stories that shaped our community as editor of the Belleville Area Independent newspaper.
Whether people agreed with every article or not, everyone knew Rosemary was paying attention and that matters.
This tribute was made even more special with the signatures of Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, and members of the Michigan Legislature. Rosemary's dedication to local journalism, civic engagement, and preserving the history of our community has left a lasting impact.
Congratulations on your retirement, Rosemary, and thank you for always showing up. We’re all wishing you a well-deserved and happy retirement!

What I know About the Airshow as of Tonight:
I've received multiple calls and messages today regarding the status of the Thunder Over Michigan air show for tomorrow, July 17th due to the low visibility from smoke.
As of this evening, I have been informed that the air show for tomorrow, July 17th, has not been cancelled yet.
I was told that today's practice session was canceled and that organizers continue to monitor conditions. A final determination regarding flight operations may not be made until tomorrow at some point.
I understand that many families are trying to make plans, and residents deserve timely, clear communication regarding any changes that could affect attendance.
I will continue sharing information as I receive it and encourage everyone to monitor official air show announcements for updates.

Protect yourself this week from the poor air quality.
Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones today as many communities across Michigan are experiencing poor air quality this week due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.
If you have a respiratory conditions like asthma, are older, or are otherwise sensitive to air quality, please take extra precautions.
If possible, considers limiting your time outdoors, keeping windows closed, checking the Air Quality Index, and using a properly fitted N95 mask if you need to be outside.
Thank you to our local health officials and first responders who continue to monitor conditions and keep our communities informed.
Stay safe, and please check on your neighbors who may need extra support.

People across Michigan have been victims of scammers who have been stealing thousands of dollars using bitcoin ATMs, and unfortunately, many of these victims are seniors.
That’s why today, Rep. Veronica Paiz, MI State Representative and I introduced legislation to crack down on these scams by creating stronger consumer protections for cryptocurrency kiosks.
Our bills would require clearer fraud warnings, place safeguards on transactions, enact daily transaction limits, and give the Attorney General stronger tools to hold bad actors accountable.
Technology should never become a tool for criminals to prey on vulnerable people. These commonsense protections will help prevent fraud and better protect Michigan consumers.

MDHHS is investigating a cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting thousands of Michiganders. Health officials believe lettuce and other salad greens may be the source.
As a precaution, MDHHS recommends avoiding pre-packaged bagged lettuce and salad greens, washing fresh produce thoroughly, and contacting your healthcare provider if you experience persistent symptoms.
