Today it was announced that plans to convert a warehouse in Romulus into an ICE detention facility have been abandoned.
It happened because residents, Michigan Department of Attorney General Dana Nessel, Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight, local and state elected officials, and countless advocates spoke up and demanded to be heard.
This is a victory for community engagement and local voices. The community made its concerns clear, and those concerns could not be ignored. A community should never be the last to know what is being planned in its own backyard.
Thank you to everyone who organized, attended meetings, raised awareness, and worked together to make their voices heard. This outcome is a reminder that when people get involved and stand together, they can make a difference.
