This week in Lansing we had a very special group of visitors! Students, teachers and parents from Dundee Elementary School came to Lansing to tour the State Capitol and learn about state government. I love seeing the next generation of leaders so excited to be here!

This morning State Representative Jimmie Wilson Jr. and I had the pleasure of presenting a state tribute to School Librarian and Media Specialist Carma Roesch, students, teachers, principal and staff of Childs Elementary School in recognition of the school library receiving exemplary status through Michigan’s School Library 21 program.
This highest level of recognition reflects the hard work and commitment of the entire Childs community to creating a strong learning environment and helping students succeed.
I especially want to recognize Superintendent Gregory Smith, Principal Laura Maurer, and School Librarian and Media Specialist Carma Roesch for their leadership and dedication to literacy. Congratulations to everyone at Childs Elementary on this well-deserved accomplishment!

Today we had the opportunity to join Toyota as they opened their new Battery Center of North America, which is another significant investment in Michigan’s automotive and manufacturing future.
What impressed me most is that Toyota is investing in more than technology. Through its "Driving Possibilities” initiative, Toyota is also investing in our local students and helping open doors to STEM education and careers across Washtenaw County.
Michigan has been an automotive leader for generations and this kind of investment gives us an opportunity to lead the next generation of mobility and innovation.
I’ve always believed Michigan doesn’t have to choose between economic growth, protecting our communities, and making them stronger. We can welcome investment and new technology while making sure our communities, our workforce and our young people are part of that success.
Thank you to Toyota for continuing to invest in Southeast Michigan and for giving us a glimpse today of what Michigan’s next chapter can look like.

Michigan communities deserve the information and legal protections they need when evaluating large-scale data center developments. That’s why I introduced the Data Center Local Decision Protection Act in Lansing yesterday.
This legislation would require large-scale data center developers to disclose expected energy and water use, infrastructure needs, environmental impacts, ownership information, and expansion plans up front. It also strengthens legal protections for local governments when they make informed decisions based on that information.
Local officials and residents deserve the facts, resources, and legal protections they need to make responsible decisions about projects that can have a lasting impact on their communities.

I-75 Travel Advisory for Monroe County: Two northbound lanes of I-75 will be closed from Dunbar Rd to North Dixie Highway for concrete patching beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Drivers traveling through the area should plan ahead and allow additional time.

IMPORTANT ABSENTEE BALLOT UPDATE
Van Buren Township voters: Please note an important update about absentee ballots for the upcoming election.
Absentee ballots were mailed beginning September 23rd. On September 28th Wayne County Elections notified Belleville, Sumpter, and Van Buren Township of a printing error on the ballots.
An omission had been identified involving the Belleville Area District Library Board portion of the ballot. This omission affects all absentee voters in Belleville, Sumpter, and Van Buren.
A corrected absentee ballot will be mailed as soon as the new ballots are printed. When you receive a new ballot in the mail, please watch for additional instructions included with your ballot.
The Van Buren Township Clerk’s Office is working to ensure voters have the information they need. We will share additional details, including images to help identify the corrected ballot, as soon as they are available.

Michigan’s Home Heating Credit deadline is this Wednesday, September 30. If you’re a qualifying Michigan homeowner or renter, you may be eligible for help with your heating costs. Last year, the average qualifying household received $171 in assistance.
Applications must be received by September 30, 2026, and there are no extensions are allowed. If you think you may qualify, don’t wait.
