There is a lot of debate right now about how to move education forward in Michigan. As both a lawmaker and a former teacher, I shared my perspective in this article on what I believe schools really need to succeed.

No doubt, academic performance can be better. But we have the tools we need to improve after years of disinvestment, mismanagement and constantly changing reforms.1 CommentsComment on Facebook
Session today was no attendance and no voting while there still has not been serious movement on a state education budget. This uncertainty creates real problems for school districts around the state who are currently planning for the upcoming year. The legislature has not only a responsibility, but also a requirement in statute to pass a budget by July 1st. I am extremely disappointed by the inability of House Republicans to do the work in order for that obligation to be met.

Had an amazing time today celebrating Juneteenth across the district! On Livernois, Black-owned businesses were having several special events, including ribbon cuttings for Pequeño Cantina (Pequeno After Dark) and Jerk at Night--be sure to check them out! No Barrier 2 Success was also holding a youth showcase, and it was wonderful to hear all about all the ways their program is helping to develop youth in our community. The City of Oak Park Juneteenth celebration was inspirational as always. Happy Juneteenth everyone

Black history is Michigan history. I'm excited to join Michiganders across the state in honoring the courage and strength of Black Americans, whose resilience and tenacity helped build our nation. I hope you all have a wonderful Juneteenth!

Earlier this week, House Dems came together to introduce an Education Vision that would fund what Michigan's kids really need. Late last night, after hours of House Republicans struggling to get on the same page with each other, they passed their budget. It's terrible.
