On Monday, State Representatives from the Agriculture Committee and Detroit Caucus toured the BetterMade production facilities to learn about the importance of agriculture and potatoes 🥔. Quick facts: Better Made uses 250k - 300k pounds of potatoes every day; it takes only 7 minutes from when the potatoes fall off the truck to the finished chip; along the way, potato starch is extracted and sold and the skins will eventually become animal feed; those numbers below the bag price can trace the potatoes in there back to the grower (who can then trace it back to the bin they used); in 1930s, there were 21 potato chip factories in Detroit and only Better Made survived (celebrating its 95th anniversary). Michigan is the “chipping potato” capital! One out of 4 potato chip bags sold in the U.S. have Michigan potatoes (Better Made uses only Michigan potatoes). Now, consider all the Michigan jobs which enable a potato chip to work its way to your mouth! Yum 😋 seed growers, field labor, farmers, truck drivers, plant workers, equipment manufacturing and sales, store owners and workers…. The first photo is Representative Jerry Neyer, Chair of the House Agriculture Committee, and me (Minority Vice Chair) and the last is a group photo of us legislators. Photos in between are of the production process. @bettermade1930 BetterMe Rep. Just bumping this up since a Republican colleague -- the bill's sponsor -- published an opinion piece about this bill in the Detroit News. Also, when she states "bipartisan" support, she's referring to the one Dem who said she does not caucus with the Dems and showed up for session that week only to vote on that bill. And while she states the House Fiscal Analysis, she does not mention that the Michigan Treasury is not supportive. Nonetheless, you can read my post for my perspective. ... See MoreSee Less

Perhaps Republicans could consider spending at least a half-billion on roads instead of a two-digit tax break. www.detroitnews.com/story/opinion/columnists/chad-livengood/2025/03/23/livengood-bad-michigan-roa...

The President’s & Musk’s — Republicans’ — policies and actions are shredding our country and institutions. They are purposely crippling our municipalities and services offered to their residents. You may have heard in the news that on March 14, President Trump issued an Executive Order to eliminate funding for the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Our library relies on federal funding from IMLS to provide you with many of your favorite resources. Here’s how we’ll be affected. #IMLS

Most of our funding at the GPPL comes from voter-approved property tax millage. That means our overall budget will stay fairly steady over the next several years; we don’t expect personnel cuts or reduced hours.

However, we still rely on funds from IMLS and the Library of Michigan to provide you with many of the services you love. Without IMLS funds, we will lose access to these services:
• Interlibrary Loan through MeLCat: physical books and other items are shared between 435 Michigan Libraries.
• MeL eContent: Access to subscription magazines, newspapers, reference books, eBook and more on a wide range of topics for all age groups at MeL.org
• Workforce Development: Access to tests, tutorials, and preparation materials for K-16 students and job seekers in LearningExpress at MeL.org
• Early Literacy Support: Summer reading and early literacy materials
• Michigan Activity Pass: A program that provides free or reduced-rate access to cultural and recreation sites across the state.
• Improved Local Community Services: Training for librarians, better buying power, negotiating rates with vendors and other efficiencies.

Without federal funding, access to these services will be substantially reduced or eliminated. As we learn more about how this EO will impact your library we will keep you posted.
