Yesterday, the legislature took a major step forward for Michigan workers and families. We passed bills to improve unemployment benefits — this is 20+ years overdue. These changes will give Michiganders the breathing room they need during tough times. ... See MoreSee Less

A letter from me about the news of a human trafficking ring bust in District 11.

Here is the letter’s text:

Dear Friends, neighbors, and all members of House District 11,

Today, authorities announced arrests in a long-running investigation into an international sex trafficking operation. Unfortunately, one of the establishments alleged to be involved and raided is a massage parlor located in our District.

I am both saddened and infuriated by such heinous crimes as human trafficking. The exploitation of vulnerable individuals is a vile act that has no place in our society. My heart goes out to the victims and their families who have suffered unimaginable trauma.

This disturbing incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive legislation to combat human trafficking. I am thankful to tell you that Democrats in the State House have been taking action crafting important legislation addressing such crimes as these – holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring justice for victims and all affected. We anticipate this package of bills coming to the House floor for votes before year’s end.

Thanks are owed to St. Clair Shores Police for their part in these investigations and arrests. As we all move into the new year and a new legislature, let’s remain vigilant and work together to eradicate the scourge of human trafficking in our communities.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me — or any of your government representatives or law enforcement — for help or assistance or resources if you or someone you know may be living in a dangerous situation.

With gratitude,

Veronica Paiz

Yesterday I testified alongside State Representative Carol Glanville in support of our "Right to Read Act" bills in the House Committee on Government Operations. This legislation would require libraries to establish policies addressing procedures for challenging the removal of library books and other media and information. The bills are directed at city/township/village and district libraries (not schools). They would also ensure the fourth amendment rights of residents who live in the library's service area and ensure municipal control. Equally important, the bills and established policies would protect librarians and library workers from retaliation for doing their jobs. ... See MoreSee Less

Back to work! Firefighters from throughout Michigan are at the Capitol today demanding that legislators "take the vote" for minimum staffing laws. House Bill 4688 would address staff shortages in the public sector, particularly for fire and emergency service personnel by allowing discussion about staffing levels in collective bargaining negotiations. I'm proud to stand with Michigan's first responders in support of this bill. ... See MoreSee Less

As part of a community, we're responsible for its well-being. This #GivingTuesday, I'm proud to uplift Arts & Scraps, a local organization I helped fund in this year's state budget. The $150,000 I brought home will help Arts & Scraps expand its creative educational STEAM programs so our community can help foster curiosity and build a more equitable future for all Michiganders. ...
