Happy Mother’s Day to all! So far, have had a lovely day. No children home this weekend but got lots of calls and went to brunch with my sister, my mom, and two friends who were also kidless this weekend. We enjoyed the buffet at the Portage Lake Yacht Club, located in the heart of our beautiful district. Then, Daniel and I went to buy flowers at HillTop Greenhouse & Farms for the back yard. It is owned by my dear friend Denise Prielipp and her husband Ken. While the flowers were all so glorious it was hard to choose, one thing we couldn’t take home was Rufus, the steer her son takes care of along with a heard of cattle and calves. Glorious day to visit them in the farm! Now off to dinner with friends. Let’s make it a priority this year to do better on maternal heath care in our state in honor of this day. ... This week, we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week! As both a legislator and a parent, I know how deeply teachers impact our children, our families, and our communities. They mentor, inspire, support, and help students grow both inside and outside the classroom.
Here in District 48, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication our educators bring to their classrooms, where they always go above and beyond to ensure every student has the tools they need to succeed. That’s why I remain committed to fighting for a state budget that invests in them and our students.
This week, and every week, we thank the educators who help shape Michigan’s future.

Last week, I was honored to welcome Pastor Trisha A. Farrell of North Lake United Methodist Church as my special guest in Lansing, where she delivered the invocation on the House floor.
Pastor Farrell has dedicated her life to ministry since the age of 19, serving through missionary work, youth ministry, community outreach, and now pastoral leadership. Known locally for a commitment to equity and human rights, Pastor Farrell brought that same spirit and message to Lansing, offering a prayer centered on unity, respect, and shared responsibility.
I’m grateful Pastor Farrell and her family were able to join us at the Capitol and represent our district so thoughtfully. Thank you for your service to our community and for sharing your inspiring words with the House!

Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of frequently visiting Freedom River to stay updated on their incredible work and continue identifying ways I can support their mission. I had the opportunity to stop by last week and tour their new outdoor spaces.
Freedom River is truly special for veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. It offers a peaceful outdoor recreation center focused on healing, connection, and community. Their work helps address the challenges many veterans face, including PTSD, isolation, and the difficult transition back to civilian life.
By providing access to nature, recreation, and supportive programming, Freedom River is helping restore hope, strengthen resilience, and build a healthier future for those who have served our country. I’m grateful for the work Freedom River is doing here in Livingston County and remain committed to supporting efforts that uplift veterans and their families.

Last week, I had the opportunity to meet with Patrick Lewis, who was participating in the Architects-Engineers-Surveyors Legislative Committee’s advocacy day here in Lansing! We talked about the Michigan Historic Preservation Tax Credit bills and how legislators can support these industries.
Patrick also happens to be the dad of my current legislative intern, Ryan Lewis, who has been working in my office since May of 2025. As a current MSU student studying Public Policy, Ryan has been an invaluable asset to my office and House District 48. His strong writing and research skills have supported numerous projects. If you have called my office, it is likely that you spoke with Ryan!

Last night I attended for the first time the Champions Gala held by Gift of Life Michigan. They had Kleenex on the table which we all needed as we heard story after story of young and older lives saved because someone signed up to be an organ donor at the time of their death. Please sign up when you renew your license or fill out your tax return (legislation we passed in the state my first term allowed for it to be added to tax returns)! Particularly inspiring were the donor moms wearing tiaras. They no longer had their child but were celebrating how their loved ones lived on through others. ... See MoreSee Less

It offered valuable insights with important implications for industry and the regional economy. Yesterday, I put forth an amendment to restore funding to the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, as House Republicans passed their proposed budget, which includes a 63% funding cut to these public universities. If we want to compete and create opportunity, we must invest in our kids, our schools, and our future. Not dismantle what makes us strong. ... See MoreSee Less
