Thank you so much to Moonwinks Café for hosting an amazing community conversation event today! Being active in the community and listening to the issues that folks are facing is my favorite part of serving. I talked with folks and answered questions about some of the dangerous Republican cuts to healthcare, senior services, education, and public safety and what Democrats are doing in Lansing to protect our communities. ... Republicans can’t continue to claim good governance while slashing care for our state's most vulnerable folks. These cuts would strip away care from millions, with over 60,000 Michiganders directly impacted right here in Washtenaw County. In Oakland County, that number jumps to 203,000, and in Wayne, a staggering 730,000 individuals. ... See MoreSee Less

🎉 Happy Juneteenth! We celebrated in Washtenaw County yesterday at the 5th annual flag raising ceremony, a tradition that began during my time serving as a County Commissioner to honor the legacy of freedom and the continued work toward justice and equity in our communities.

What an inspiring ceremony with speakers including:

🎤 Master of Ceremony: Akintunde Oluwadare
History of Juneteenth: Dr. Anglesia Brown
Special Guest: U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell
💬 County Commissioners: Crystal Lyte, Justin Hodge, and Caroline Sanders
🗣️ Keynote Speaker: Dr. Debby Covington, who moved everyone with her powerful words: "Make the unknown known and the invisible visible."
📖 Poetry Readings: Layla Brody and Ruth Mella

📝 For those who don’t know, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Specifically, it marks the day, June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, which was proclaimed by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. It's also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day.
