I love the University of Michigan, but that doesn’t mean they get a free pass to completely ignore local leaders and residents when they decide to make a massive land purchase, take it off the tax rolls, and bulldoze over local zoning laws without caring about how it impacts our neighborhoods.
300 acres of land in the last two years. That’s including Concordia University’s campus, and land in Ypsilanti Township for the proposed Los Alamos Data Center.
That’s why I joined State Representative Jimmie Wilson Jr. and State Representative Morgan Foreman in introducing a new package to roll back this unchecked power. The rule is simple: if you buy land in our towns, you have to follow the same exact rules, ordinances, and zoning laws as anyone else. This gives local residents and elected officials a real seat at the table and holds the university accountable to the communities it calls home.

We are finally getting Washtenaw Avenue fixed! After years of dealing with crumbling pavement and potholes on one of our busiest local roads, the state has officially moved this repaving project into the pipeline.
