What a weekend of fall festivals in the district with perfect weather! I attended the Freedom River fall fest Saturday night, where I had great conversations with veterans in the area. I also attended the family fun Bubblefest, in Broadway Park West in Ann Arbor, and the wonderful Many Hands Lifesharing Community Fall Festival, a 90-acre project to build a place where adult children with disabilities will one day be able to live and thrive with social workers also in residence. ...

Yesterday afternoon, I attended a ribbon-cutting for the new Avalon Housing project in Ypsilanti. We were able to tour the new 22–unit affordable housing complex that is nearly complete. Fourteen of the units will be for currently unhoused individuals, and the rest is for low income residents. They had more than 500 applications from low income residents and will be choosing via lottery who gets to move in. Obviously, there is a great need out there for this type of housing, which also includes ADA unit units for disabled veterans. The units that are completed are bright and cheery and spacious. All in all, an amazing accomplishment as it took puzzling together a lot of different grants. ...

What a wonderful evening focusing on the environment last night in Detroit! First, I attended the Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council Gala and then the Michigan League of Conservation Voters Gala. At that event, Steve Hamp, a lifelong conservationist and long-standing member of the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund board, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. Attorney General Dana Nessel received the Legacy of Courage Award for her fight to make utilities accountable. All in all, an inspiring evening. ...

What a great event last night at The Collins Off Main in Chelsea, where I attended the 2026 Trail Raiser for the Border to Border Trail. I am so proud to have secured $3 million in funding for them years ago to help connect the trail to Dexter. Last night, we got an inside look at their 2026 projects, and heard about future B2B Trail development plans. If you haven’t been on the trail, autumn’s is a particularly wonderful time to explore the trail on a bike or by foot! ...

Two of my most favorite fall events in the district are this weekend! If you are a huge Gilmore Girls fan like I am, head to Brighton today through Sunday for Destination Starz Hollow, when the downtown is transformed into the TV town with everything from Luke’s Diner to the Dragonfly Inn. It is also a genius tourism economic opportunity for the town sponsored by my friends at Explore Brighton Howell Area, MI! My second favorite event is the Village of Webster Historic Preservation Commission fall festival in Webster Township, complete with black smithing and sheep herding demonstrations and crafts for sale. Both are the absolute best. I love autumn! @ ...

I so enjoyed catching up, alongside other elected officials, with many of my favorite farmers last night at the Washtenaw County Farm Bureau dinner at the gorgeous Revel Run Equestrian event space in Chelsea. Damian Rivera and Rosemary Linares were there from Damian’s Craft Meats, which is bringing Washtenaw County's first USDA-inspected slaughterhouse and craft meat boutique to Manchester. And I always love to catch up with Denise and Ken Prielipp, who own the lovely Hilltop Greenhouse & Farms, a family-owned garden center and 52,000-square-foot greenhouse located in Ann Arbor. It holds a special place in my heart as my late father bought all the flowers for the garden in my parents’ home we now own that are still flourishing decades later! ...

This morning, I attended the 190th anniversary of the North Lake United Methodist Church. It was quite the celebration and not dimmed by rain. Thank you for letting us join to read a tribute from the state of Michigan for all they have done for the community. ...

Times have certainly changed since I was a student at U-M in the early 80’s! Yesterday, I had a chance to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of Wolverine Village, the university’s newest residential community built to expand affordable, on-campus housing for undergraduate students.
The five residents halls have 2,300 student beds and include an 800 plus-seat dining hall. More importantly, it’s supports the university’s goal of providing affordable housing for every first-year student who wishes to live on Central campus.
