We showed up today and reminded people WHY housing is so important to the people of MI.

All across the state local officials are telling us that we can’t tell them what to do, and they’re saying it at the expense of the young Michiganders who want to build a life here.

One thing I’ve never done is backed down from a fight that I thought was worth it. Today I spoke to a room full of homeowners- but I spoke on behalf of the people who can’t be in the room.

They’re working, studying, and trying to make a dollar stretch. They’re wondering why they keep working harder and getting less. They’re praying. They’re frustrated. They’re wondering why they aren’t where their parents were at their age. They’re tired. And today I was there to hold a seat at the table for them.

This fight is the hardest one I’ve ever had. There’s been lots of yelling, lots of people telling me housing isn’t the states business, lots of people making threats- but that lets me know we are heading the right way.

This fight is worth it. 💪🏾

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. There is a lot going on in the world- taking care of your mental well-being is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and no one should have to struggle alone.

Strong communities start with healthy minds. Let’s continue building a community where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to ask for help when they need it.

If you or someone you know is struggling, resources are available and help is always within reach.

For 60 years the Grand Rapids Housing Commission has been here working to make sure housing is available and affordable.

It was my pleasure to be chosen as this years keynote and to be able to thank them for their mission. I spoke about housing being a right and removing barriers to not only rental opportunities, but ownership so that the next generation can plant their roots.

Congratulations on 60 years!

The Emory Ribbon Cutting with Diatribe is what it looks like when we invest in neighborhoods that have too often been overlooked—especially here in the 49507 community.

The Division Ave corridor has long been overlooked for investment but it has never lacked in culture.

I’m proud to support work that centers the people who are so often passed over, because this community deserves to feel seen, valued, and poured into.

This wasn’t just about opening a building—it was about opening doors. Creating space for connection, creativity, and opportunity.

Moments like this remind me why I do the work!

Yesterday in reg reform we gave testimony on our Housing Opportunity Tax Credit package.

This state level low income housing tax credit will work with the federal tax credit to ensure we have long term affordable housing for Michigan families.

We know that in order for housing to truly be affordable and abundant we need to use every tool possible. From zoning, to tax credits, to building code and more. Lets work together to change the housing landscape!

I am thankful every time citizens decide to show up and advocate for what’s important. Last week was Delta Day at the Capitol and I had the chance to speak about policy priorities that matter most to our community.

Thank you to the wonderful women of Delta Sigma Theta who show up and make policy a priority every year. I appreciate you!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the Reclaiming MI Pride event at Lotus Brew Coffee!

At a time when we're seeing renewed efforts to roll back hard-won protections for the LGBTQ+ community. It's more important than ever that we stay engaged and stand firm. Michigan Democrats are continuing to defend these rights, protect access to care, and make sure our communities are safe and supportive for everyone.

Grateful for the group of neighbors that came out for real conversations and community. Pride is about progress, and we’re keeping that momentum going.

Young people all over the country are feeling frustrated with and disconnected from the political process. I've spoken to so many right here in Michigan who are wrestling with renouncing politics all together, or jumping in head first and being the change they want to see.

They have questions and they recognize that voices are missing at the table.

It meant so much to me to sit down with a room full of students for an Advocacy Fireside Chat at GVSU and to have real dialogue about the state of our country and the systems that control it. Our babies are dealing with REAL problems and they have REAL questions!

Thank you to MDP Chair Hertel who accepted my invite and made the trip to West Michigan to talk to the children about how they can be engaged in meaningful ways.

The students and I agreed to continue working together. Our first order of business is pulling together a list of policies that directly address their needs as citizens here in Michigan. That list will be available soon and we will be advocating to get them across the finish line together!

A huge thank you to MLCV, Youth Climate Council, GVSU NAACP, Black leaders, aspiring for critical knowledge-Beta Chapter, and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Inc- Iota epsilon Chapter for bringing us all together.

Stay engaged. Stay Loud. Stay in it!
