Although these bills did not make it out of the house this session I wanted to share the floor speech that was given. It reaffirms my why and explains why we must reform how we look at housing in Michigan. The work continues next year and I hope we can do it together! #michiganhousingforward ... See MoreSee Less

It was my pleasure to honor Ms. Lillie Lester on the House floor with her family and my colleagues. Lillie was the first woman to serve as a legislative sergeant-at-arms in the United States, protecting and assisting legislators, staff, and visitors at the Michigan Capitol. She was also a founding member of the Michigan Black Legislative Caucus and a mentor to many of its early members. ... See MoreSee Less

Hi everyone! I have good and bad news to share with you. The good is that we are still hard at work in Lansing––the bad is this means I need to postpone tomorrow’s Community Conversation until next year.
I know you all were looking forward to discussing our goals for the next legislative cycle. However, there is still more work to be done in Lansing this year and I am making the most of the time we have left to ensure our priorities get passed into law! Apologies for the inconvenience but I hope to see you soon. Happy Holidays!

This week I provided testimony in the houses Economic Development & Small Business committee on four bills that address housing reform at the local level. These bills are a part of a larger package that really work to answer three questions:What is stopping us from creating enough housing options to house Michiganders? What is adding to the cost of housing unnecessarily? And finally what can we do at the state level to address these things? What I found doing this research is that there have been laws set in place over the last few decades that have created this national housing crisis. If we truly care about people having a roof over their head we must be bold enough to undo some of these things and refine them to better for the people we serve. Here is a little background on my why. Thank you to the committee for voting these bills out and ALL the amazing partners who have helped in this work I look forward to continuing the work! ... Thanksgiving is my favorite time of the year because it includes celebrating the things that bring us together and being thankful for our blessings. I was able to do exactly that at this year‘s turkey giveaway with McDonald’s at Gerald R Ford school.
It was awesome to join other community leaders and see our school families before the holiday break. Happy Thanksgiving!
