Congratulations to the young men graduating from the LEAD 360 Academy! 🎓
Over the past seven weeks, these young men have committed themselves to mentorship, leadership development, life skills training, and learning from leaders across our community.
It was a pleasure to join them and their families in celebrating this accomplishment and to present a tribute recognizing the hard work they put into reaching this milestone.
I’m always excited to see our young people investing in themselves, building their confidence, and preparing to lead.
A special thank you to Dr. Charles Hudson III for his leadership and commitment to LEAD 360 and for continuing to invest in the next generation of leaders in our community.

Sunday Dinner & Dialogue is always about making space for real conversations with our community. 💙
Thank you to everyone who joined us around the table this weekend, and a special thank you to Together West Michigan for being part of the conversation. We talked about the future of our community, the importance of voting, and how we can continue organizing and mobilizing our neighbors to make our voices heard.
There is so much work ahead, and I’m grateful for everyone who continues to show up, speak up, and stay engaged. This is what community looks like!

This year my budget requests included the Michigan Black Business Alliance. Last month I was able to speak to that request and their work in front of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity. I’m excited to share that we secured $250,000 in the state budget to make sure their work continues! 🎉
The Michigan Black Business Alliance supports entrepreneurs and small businesses, helping them grow, create jobs, and build stronger communities across our state.
I’m proud to have helped secure this investment and to continue supporting the organizations creating opportunity and strengthening Michigan’s economy!

Michigan has always been a state that builds, innovates, and leads. We shouldn’t be moving backward now.
Today, I joined advocates and community leaders to speak out against the proposed rollback of cleaner car standards at the federal level. This isn’t just about cars, it’s about protecting consumer choice, lowering costs for families, supporting good-paying Michigan jobs, and keeping our air clean.
Whether you drive a gas-powered vehicle, a hybrid, or an electric vehicle, you deserve the freedom to choose the vehicle that works best for your family and your budget. Rolling back these standards means fewer choices, higher costs, and more pollution. That’s not the direction Michigan should be headed.
Let’s continue investing in innovation, protecting our communities, and building a stronger future together. 🚗💙

One thing I’ve learned is that economic development follows our direction. We dont have to choose advancement over people. Yes, AI is here but we can decide how and where it has influence. And if we make the wrong decision we can work to correct it.
That’s why I joined colleagues to introduce the Data Center Guardrails package. It includes bills on:
⚡️Data Center Ratepayer protections
🔉Data Center Sound Requirements
🤝Community Benefit Agreements
📄NDA Agreement Limits
💧Water Regulations
🏗️Decommissioning Plans
👷Labor Agreements
My specific legislation would require Community Benefit Agreements for new data centers before construction can begin. This ensures local residents have a seat at the table and that communities benefit from the development happening in their own backyards.
Responsible development means investing in local workers, protecting our natural resources, strengthening infrastructure, and creating lasting community benefits. Economic growth and community priorities can—and should—go hand in hand.

Last week I stopped by United Methodist Community House for senior bingo.
Thank you to UMCH for keeping our seniors engaged and thank you to the seniors for keeping ME engaged! It was wonderful hearing what issues they are concerned about and to help them navigate their voting and resource questions. 💙
There’s nothing better than spending an afternoon with some of the amazing seniors in our community!🫶🏾
Also pro-tip: Don’t mess with the seniors and their bingo, it was serious business! 😂

🚨 BUDGET UPDATE!
I’m excited to share that the 2027 state budget includes $1 Million in funding for a Southeast Business Corridor Revolving Loan Fund for District 82!
Four years ago, I brought residents, community leaders, and local partners together to answer one question: How do we revitalize our neighborhood business corridors without displacing the people and businesses who live here?
The answer was clear. Years of underinvestment in Southeast Grand Rapids left too many vacant buildings, lowered property values, and made it harder for longtime local property owners—especially owners of color—to access the capital needed to invest in their own community.
Instead of accepting that as the status quo, we got to work.
Working with city officials and Senator Brinks, we secured state funding and matching city funding to create this revolving loan fund. The fund will help fill financing gaps by providing low-interest loans (1–3%) with a priority on supporting longtime local owners who have been denied access to capital.
That means more vacant and underused buildings can become neighborhood businesses, services, housing, and community spaces that families can enjoy close to home—all while reducing blight and strengthening our commercial corridors.
This isn’t about helping corporations. It’s about making sure the people who have invested in this community finally have access to the tools they need to invest back into it. That’s how we create neighborhoods where everyone can thrive.
There are a lot more details to come and we are bringing in more local partners to help make sure this fund has impact but I’m excited to share this milestone!
