August is Black Business Month! Throughout the month, we’re highlighting just a few of the incredible Black-owned businesses making an impact in our community and that you should be checking out all year long.
This week, we’re spotlighting Chez Olga, Mahogany Island of Beauty, Genesis Consulting, and Bee’s Squeeze!Supporting Black-owned businesses means supporting our neighbors, local entrepreneurs, and the people who help make our community stronger.
Black businesses traditionally have less access to capital and are investing in parts of town that have been underinvested in by local government. They do the hard work of serving communities that are often overlooked. This is why Black Business Month is so important and why going out of our way to support Black owned businesses matters all year long!

Veterans Day is a big deal in District 82!
As we prepare for our 2026 celebration of local veterans we want to extend an invite to you.
I want to hear about the veterans who are part of your life and our District 82 community. Do you have a veteran in your life you’d like to honor?
We would love an opportunity to thank the incredible men and women who have served our country and recognize the sacrifices they and their families have made. 🇺🇸
Share their name and story with us using the link in my bio by September 15th. We will honor them with a special state tribute at our annual Veterans Day Breakfast.

ICYMI the federal government is trying to take your right to choose away AGAIN!
I joined colleagues last week to speak out against federal efforts to roll back cleaner vehicle standards and limit the purchasing choices for American families.
Michiganders deserve the freedom to choose how they drive, without being tied to rising gas prices or policies that stand in the way of innovation. Whether it’s gas, hybrid, or electric, we should be advancing technology, expanding options, and making it more affordable to get where you need to go.
Michigan is the state that put America on wheels — and we should continue leading the way forward. 🚗
We have always been a state that builds and innovates. Let’s keep it that way. 💙

Congratulations to the young men graduating from the LEAD 360 Academy! 🎓
Over the past seven weeks, these young men have committed themselves to mentorship, leadership development, life skills training, and learning from leaders across our community.
It was a pleasure to join them and their families in celebrating this accomplishment and to present a tribute recognizing the hard work they put into reaching this milestone.
I’m always excited to see our young people investing in themselves, building their confidence, and preparing to lead.
A special thank you to Dr. Charles Hudson III for his leadership and commitment to LEAD 360 and for continuing to invest in the next generation of leaders in our community.
Congratulations to each of the graduates! I can’t wait to see what you do next! 🎉

Sunday Dinner & Dialogue is always about making space for real conversations with our community. 💙
Thank you to everyone who joined us around the table this weekend, and a special thank you to Together West Michigan for being part of the conversation. We talked about the future of our community, the importance of voting, and how we can continue organizing and mobilizing our neighbors to make our voices heard.
There is so much work ahead, and I’m grateful for everyone who continues to show up, speak up, and stay engaged. This is what community looks like!

This year my budget requests included the Michigan Black Business Alliance. Last month I was able to speak to that request and their work in front of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity. I’m excited to share that we secured $250,000 in the state budget to make sure their work continues! 🎉
The Michigan Black Business Alliance supports entrepreneurs and small businesses, helping them grow, create jobs, and build stronger communities across our state.
I’m proud to have helped secure this investment and to continue supporting the organizations creating opportunity and strengthening Michigan’s economy!

Michigan has always been a state that builds, innovates, and leads. We shouldn’t be moving backward now.
Today, I joined advocates and community leaders to speak out against the proposed rollback of cleaner car standards at the federal level. This isn’t just about cars, it’s about protecting consumer choice, lowering costs for families, supporting good-paying Michigan jobs, and keeping our air clean.
Whether you drive a gas-powered vehicle, a hybrid, or an electric vehicle, you deserve the freedom to choose the vehicle that works best for your family and your budget. Rolling back these standards means fewer choices, higher costs, and more pollution. That’s not the direction Michigan should be headed.
Let’s continue investing in innovation, protecting our communities, and building a stronger future together. 🚗💙
