In my opinion, the problem with data centers isn't really data centers themselves, but the fact that by going out of your way to welcome them, you are also surrendering to the unabated and total AI-ification of our society and economy. Meanwhile, literacy collapses.

There are amazing use cases for AI, of course, such as discovering new drugs and materials that could transform the world and improve humanity. Unfortunately, our society does not seem resilient enough to assimilate those benefits without also succumbing to the worst externalities of AI… outsourcing all critical thinking and artistic endeavors to a machine and an algorithm is actually very bad for human civilization!!!

Any massive construction project will bring some jobs. It’s a question of whether we are thinking through what it means to support the AI-ification of the economy and society. We weren’t ready for the way social media upended news, culture, elections, social trust, and we’re certainly not ready for how AI will turbocharge these things. Everyone is saying “well we can’t stop AI.” And I don’t think we should stop it. But I think slowing down and having intentional policies to help shape adoption, culture, and usage would be a lesson well-learned from the failures of grappling with social media.

I am devastated by the news of the attack on the mosque in San Diego. My thoughts are with the Muslim community in San Diego and across the country, including right here in Michigan. Islamophobia is blight on our society, and I am committed to continuing to fight against hate crimes and acts of terror motivated by anti-Muslim hate.

It’s hard to feel excited about being featured in the New York Times this week when the subject matter is so personally devastating. But I hope people, especially people who aren’t Jewish, can read the piece and understand how their overheated rhetoric may be contributing to a permissive environment for anti-Jewish extremism. A society in which Jews are hounded out of public life is a society that is not free. I will continue to represent my constituents to the best of my ability.
