25 years later, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the first responders, service members, and everyday Americans who showed incredible courage in the days that followed. We will never forget.

This Friday from 11am-3pm there will be a Community Resource Day at the Belleville Area District Library. Assistance with voter registration, Secretary of State services, and vital records will be available.

Monroe County Travel Advisory: Saturday - 8/29/26 @ 10:00am
There is a travel advisory for Monroe County next Monday.
Southbound I-275 Exit 2 to US-24 will be closed for paving operations in Monroe County from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31. Traffic will be detoured via southbound I-275, southbound I-75, Nadeau Road Exit 18, eastbound Nadeau Road, northbound I-75, and northbound I-275 to US-24.

Welcome back to school! I’m wishing students, parents, teachers, and school staff a safe, successful, and fun school year. In Lansing we fought hard to protect universal breakfast and lunch so every public school student can focus on learning instead of an empty stomach.
You should also be aware that this year, a new law goes into place that puts limits on cell phone use during the school day. Districts must have policies that keep wireless devices from becoming distractions during instructional time, while allowing exceptions for emergencies, medical needs, special education accommodations, and certain academic uses.

Too often, we hear about people incarcerated in Michigan not receiving the basic healthcare, privacy, disability accommodations, and safe conditions they deserve while in state custody.
That’s why this week, I introduced two bills to establish clear standards for medical, dental, optical, mental health, disability, and medical privacy protections in Michigan’s correctional facilities. These bills protect basic human dignity while preserving MDOC’s ability to maintain safety and security.
Being incarcerated should never mean being denied basic standards of care and dignity. Michigan must hold itself to a higher standard.

Yesterday in Lansing, a bill to take the Michigan Money out of Politics ballot initiative off of the November ballot was brought up for a vote in the House.
I voted no on this bill because I believe that the voters of this state should decide on this initiative.
If the legislature were to adopt this instead of the voters, future legislatures would have the ability to weaken it with a simple majority vote.
We absolutely need to get money out of politics to make sure politicians are working for their constituents and not their donors!

As Michigan continues to see proposals for large-scale data centers, local governments are being asked to make decisions about projects that can have significant impacts on surrounding communities.
Before those decisions are made, communities should have access to the information they need to understand the potential impacts, including thermal impacts, and the demands these facilities can place on local infrastructure.
That’s why today I introduced legislation to give local governments and residents greater transparency and better information when considering large-scale data center development.
These bills would make sure that local municipalities have access to key information before making decisions that may affect residents, the environment, infrastructure, and the surrounding communities.
Communities should not have to approve a project first and find out its impacts later.
