When the most powerful person in your workplace publicly insults you, what do you do?
This week, the Speaker of the Michigan House called me “low IQ” and “probably one of the dumbest ones in the legislature” —in front of the press, state employees, and my colleagues.
I’m standing up for my sons and daughters—and our future generation watching what leadership looks like. Because leadership is not about power plays or put-downs. Strong leadership means treating others with dignity and respect, even when we disagree.
It also means holding ourselves and each other accountable, especially when someone abuses their position of power. No one is above that responsibility, and the public deserves better from those they’ve entrusted with their vote.
As public officials, we shouldn’t expect praise for doing the jobs we were elected to do. Our communities are counting on us to work together and deliver results. When families are living paycheck to paycheck, facing cuts to critical services, or trying to figure out how to pay for groceries, the last thing they should have to worry about is whether their elected leaders are tearing each other down.
Too often, people face harassment in the workplace, while those in power think they can get away with it.
But not this time. I want my children and others to know that standing up to bullies is always the right thing to do.
I want them to see that strong leadership means lifting others up not tearing them down. It means doing the work, not taking credit for what you didn’t do. It means showing up every day with courage, integrity, and a commitment to the people who put their trust in you.
That’s how I lead. That’s how I will continue to lead.
No matter what names they call me. Because the people of Michigan didn’t elect me to play political games. They elected me to serve. And I will never stop showing up —for them, for my family, and for what’s right.

I'm standing up for my sons and daughters and for our future generation —to show them that real leadership means treating others with respect, not tearing colleagues down.
As public officials, we shouldn’t expect praise for simply doing the job we were elected to do. Our communities are counting on us to work together and deliver real results.
When families are struggling —uncertain about their next paycheck or facing cuts to critical services, the last thing they should have to worry about is how their elected leaders are treating each other.
No matter how others choose to act or what they say, I’m going to keep showing up, working hard, and doing what’s right for my constituents. Because now, more than ever, they need us to lead with integrity.

Public Statement from State Representative Mai Xiong regarding disparaging remarks made by the Michigan Speaker of the House
I am deeply disheartened and disappointed by the recent remarks made by the Speaker of the Michigan House, in front of the press and dozens of colleagues on April 30, 2025. The Speaker referred to me as “a very low IQ representative” and “probably one of the dumbest ones in the legislature.” These words weren’t just disrespectful—they were meant to demean, belittle, and devalue.
Let me be clear:
What’s dumb is passing a state House bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico, a body of water thousands of miles away from Michigan and a waste of taxpayer dollars.
What’s dumb is violating the Michigan Constitution by hijacking nine bills passed by the legislature, including one I authored to support our public workers, and blocking them from reaching the governor’s desk while pretending to hold veto power he simply doesn’t have.
What’s dumb is canceling session, abandoning the work of the people, to go rub elbows with politicians.
What’s dumb is taking credit for securing new fighter jets at Selfridge Air National Guard Base when the Speaker has voted against every budget bill that would have provided essential funding to Selfridge and Michigan’s military families.
And while the Speaker uses the press and platform of the Speakership to tear others down, let me remind him, and the people of Michigan—who I am.
I am a mother of four young children who will one day ask me why the highest elected official in the House called their mom dumb and “low IQ.”
I am a refugee and immigrant who came here seeking freedom.
I am a daughter, sister, a wife, a friend.
I am the first Hmong American elected —and currently only Asian American woman in the Michigan House of Representatives.
What’s truly dumb is using a position of power to insult and diminish others, especially in front of colleagues and the press, instead of working together to solve the real problems our communities face.
I was elected to lead, not to be intimidated. I will continue fighting for the people of Michigan with intelligence, integrity, and heart, no matter what names are thrown my way.

One year ago, today, I was officially sworn into office for the first time to serve in the Michigan Legislature.
I’m grateful that I still get to get up everyday to fight for the thousands of Michiganders back home and in Macomb County.
When I got my official headshot taken, I knew I wanted to wear my mother’s traditional heirloom silver Hmong “Xauv” necklace. In 1979, my mother swam across the Mekong River from Laos into Thailand to escape persecution. We lived in the refugees camp, where I was born. With nothing but the clothes on our backs, we were accepted and came the U.S. under the Refugee Admissions Program in 1987.
To the residents of the 13th House District in Roseville, St. Clair Shores, and Warren, thank you for allowing me to serve you. It truly my honor to be able to give back to the community that’s given me and my family so much.

Yesterday, I had the honor of visiting my local Roseville Fire Department in the 13th House District. They recently responded to a massive fire at an engineering plant known for using dangerous chemicals —including PFAS, in their manufacturing process. The response of the Roseville Firefighters, was nothing short of heroic and a testament to the rigorous training and deep commitment our firefighters bring to every call.
🚨 But after spending time with them, I have to sound the alarm: our firefighters are doing everything they possibly can to protect us —but Republicans are failing to protect them.
Like thousands of local fire departments across our state, Roseville is facing severe budget shortfalls and recruitment challenges. Despite this, they’ve made real progress —increasing the number of female firefighters and modernizing both of their stations through local bonds to better reflect the needs of today’s diverse force. That kind of initiative is inspiring.
I even had the chance to put on their full gear — SCBA, helmet, protective layers, and an axe. It's heavy, it's intense, and it drove home just how physically and mentally demanding this job is. These aren’t just first responders —they’re elite professionals. But despite doing everything right, the department is being forced to work with broken and aging equipment. SCBA frames are literally splitting in half —and the very federal grants they depend on, like the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program, have been discontinued indefinitely due to the Trump administration’s executive orders.
Let me be clear: Republicans who are in the majority in both the Michigan House, and at the federal level, are turning their backs on the very people who run toward danger for us.
And it doesn’t stop at equipment. Mental and physical health is a real danger. Cancer is a deadly risk for our firefighters. That’s why I introduced House Bill 6058 of 2024 —a bill that would lower health insurance costs for firefighters, so they can focus on healing and staying strong. It passed both chambers last year —but the Republican Speaker of the House is holding my bill hostage —unconstitutionally, denying these heroes the affordable and accessibility healthcare support they need and deserve.
Our firefighters show up for us every single day —in the most dangerous and heartbreaking situations imaginable. It’s time we show up for them with more than just words. That means adopting legislation to address recruitment and retention, fully funding departments, and standing up to those who would rather play politics than protect public servants.
The Roseville Fire Department is doing everything they possibly can to serve our residents with honor and integrity. It’s time my colleagues do the same.

This #EarthDay2025 I’m reminded of what we leave behind:
Broken wires. Empty vape cartridges. Rusted car parts. Cigarette butts. Plastic wrappers. Shattered glass bottles.
These are just some of the things we picked up during our annual Road Cleanup.
It’s a harsh reminder of the everyday impact we have on our environment and the responsibility we share to protect it.
We only have one Earth. It’s up to us to take care of it—not just today, but every day.
Join me this #EarthDay and every day by honoring our planet through simple actions like keeping our parks, roads, and waterways clean.
Let’s do it for the next generation, and the one after that.
