Survivors of human trafficking need our support, and Michigan House Democrats worked to deliver it. We passed legislation to expand expungement eligibility for survivors and hold perpetrators accountable, making Michigan a safer state.

UPDATE: Though the bills passed in the House, they did not come up for a vote in the Senate. Therefore, the bills are "dead" and will not go to the Governor for signature into law.
Tonight, the Michigan House Democrats voted to enact my and State Representative Carol Glanville's House Bills 6034 and 6035, also referred to as “The Freedom to Read Act”. These bills will require library boards to establish transparent policies and procedures regarding public accessibility to library materials. These policies will maintain local/municipal and residents’ control; anyone who challenges a book or other library material must reside in the library’s service area. Library materials will have the same protections as those in the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act. These bills pertain to city/township/village and district libraries; these bills do not affect school libraries. Thanks to the Michigan Library Association and their work with stakeholders, and cultural and religious organizations who also worked with us in crafting meaningful legislation for all, and many thanks, of course, to librarians throughout the state. Rather than vote to protect kids from sextortion, Republicans decided not to do the job they were elected to do, they have closed up shop and gone home. All because the Dems want to protect working people. (Here are their empty seats.)

That was not the way the local news spun it last night. Made it all out to be the Dems holding up reforms and protections.
Yesterday, the legislature took a major step forward for Michigan workers and families. We passed bills to improve unemployment benefits — this is 20+ years overdue. These changes will give Michiganders the breathing room they need during tough times.

A letter from me about the news of a human trafficking ring bust in District 11.
Here is the letter’s text:
Dear Friends, neighbors, and all members of House District 11,
Today, authorities announced arrests in a long-running investigation into an international sex trafficking operation. Unfortunately, one of the establishments alleged to be involved and raided is a massage parlor located in our District.
I am both saddened and infuriated by such heinous crimes as human trafficking. The exploitation of vulnerable individuals is a vile act that has no place in our society. My heart goes out to the victims and their families who have suffered unimaginable trauma.
This disturbing incident underscores the urgent need for comprehensive legislation to combat human trafficking. I am thankful to tell you that Democrats in the State House have been taking action crafting important legislation addressing such crimes as these – holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring justice for victims and all affected. We anticipate this package of bills coming to the House floor for votes before year’s end.
Thanks are owed to St. Clair Shores Police for their part in these investigations and arrests. As we all move into the new year and a new legislature, let’s remain vigilant and work together to eradicate the scourge of human trafficking in our communities.
