LANSING, Mich., April 19, 2024 — The Michigan House of Representatives approved state Rep. Veronica Paiz’s (D-Harper Woods) House Resolution 222 yesterday, recognizing April 16 as Librarian and Library Worker Day in the state of Michigan. This date highlights the valuable contributions made by all library staff, users, administrators, and Friend groups to Michigan libraries, in keeping our libraries running.

“Many of us elected officials host our coffee hours in libraries — we know that our libraries are more than just buildings with bookshelves; they’re vibrant hubs of knowledge, creativity and community,” Paiz said. “Libraries are sanctuaries where people from all walks of life can come together to learn, explore and grow.”

The resolution emphasizes that Michigan’s librarians and library support staff embody the spirit of service and commitment to ensure that every person who walks through their doors feels welcomed and valued.

“This resolution was an opportunity to honor and extend our heartfelt gratitude to librarians and library support staff,” Paiz continued. “Their passion for excellence in their profession enriches the lives of all who visit our libraries. From promoting literacy to fostering cultural enrichment, their contributions are truly immeasurable. They are the champions of intellectual freedom and open access to information, standing firm in their commitment to ensuring equity of access for all.”
