Just over one year ago, Rep. Bierlein and I teamed up to pass a bill that created a new fundraising license plate for the 4-H foundation of Michigan. This plate gives drivers across our state a way to proudly support Michigan 4-H and the next generation of leaders. For generations, 4-H has helped young people build confidence, leadership skills, and a strong sense of community through agriculture, service, and hands-on learning experiences. Thank you to everyone who continues to support Michigan 4-H and invest in our youth.

Today, a permanent injunction was granted blocking radioactive Waste from coming into our community confirming what we already know. We are NOT a dumping Ground. This is what happens when residents speak up and refuse to accept less. Also want to acknowledge Abdul El-Sayed for testifying during the bench trial and standing with our communities in this fight. Today’s ruling is a huge victory for public health and the people who refused to give up. ... See MoreSee Less

A Second in-custody death at Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility has now been publicly reported within days of the first.
Given the timing of these incidents and prior concerns raised through oversight channels regarding facility conditions, medical responsiveness, and operations at the prison, I have formally requested preservation of records and clarification regarding investigative and mortality review procedures.
At this stage, it is critical that all relevant facts, timelines, and records are preserved and that appropriate review processes are allowed to proceed thoroughly and transparently.
As Minority Vice Chair of the House Oversight Committee, my office will continue monitoring this situation closely.

Today I joined my colleagues at a press conference to call for greater transparency and accountability regarding allegations involving Jeffrey Epstein and his historic ties to the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Recent reporting has raised deeply troubling questions about how Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell allegedly gained access to young people through the institution. Survivors deserve to have those concerns taken seriously and fully examined.
No institution is above scrutiny when serious allegations involving the safety and well-being of children are involved.
Transparency, accountability, and support for survivors should never be partisan issues.

Another woman has reportedly died while in state custody at Michigan’s only women’s prison. This death demands accountability, transparency, and a full review of what is happening inside this facility.
As Vice Chair of the House Oversight Committee, I do not believe these repeated incidents can continue to be treated as isolated cases.
Over the past several months, lawmakers, advocates, former employees, incarcerated women, and families have raised serious concerns about medical care, environmental conditions, and systemic failures at the Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility. Those concerns deserve answers.
No matter why someone is incarcerated, the state has a responsibility to ensure they are treated with dignity and provided safe conditions and adequate medical care while in custody.
Incarceration does not absolve the state of its responsibility to protect.
I will continue pushing for answers and meaningful oversight into this facility.

This week I introduced a bill to prohibit ex parte requests for data center development. As you may know, the hyperscale data center in Saline Twp requested, and was granted, an ex parte request which meant there were no public hearings about the community and environmental concerns the facility would bring. This legislation would require future cases to be heard in a contested manner at the MPSC to ensure residents have the opportunity to weigh into the project. ... See MoreSee Less

May is Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month, and this week I introduced a resolution to officially recognize it in the state of Michigan. Huntington’s Disease is a devastating neurodegenerative condition with no cure that affects movement, cognition, and emotional health. In rare cases, it can also affect children. This month is about raising awareness, supporting families and caregivers, and recognizing the strength of those living with this disease every day. By continuing to raise awareness, we can help advance research and work toward a cure. ... See MoreSee Less
