Michigan Reopened June 22 Gov. Whitmer fully reopened both indoor and outdoor settings in Michigan on June 22, increasing capacity to 100%, and face masks will no longer be required. Individual businesses will still be allowed to require masks. Originally, the state of Michigan was supposed to fully reopen July 1, but with more than 9 million vaccines administered and COVID-19 cases plummeting, that timeline was accelerated. Furthermore, according to Michigan’s COVID-19 vaccine dashboard, more than 4.9 million eligible adults in the state have received at least one COVID-19 dose, accounting for about 60% of the population.

Fireworks Reminder The Fourth of July federal holiday is almost here, and I want to remind Michiganders who plan on setting off fireworks which days are legal to do so in their local community. Michigan’s Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 (Public Act 256) was amended in December 2018, giving local government entities – villages, townships and cities – the right to restrict the days and times for their residents to use consumer fireworks by enacting a local ordinance. If no action is taken to restrict firework use at the local government level, state law requires that fireworks must be allowed on the following days, after 11 a.m.:

It was an honor to attend the Eagle Scout Ceremony for Boy Scout Troop 368 of Grand Blanc on June 7, 2021. Mott Community College Awarded 60 by 30 Student Success Grant The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) in partnership with the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) has awarded a total of $750,000 to nine community colleges to improve student success rates among adult students. One of the five colleges to receive the 60 by 30 Student Success Grant of up to $150,000, is Mott Community College. MCC will implement corequisite and intensive support models for delivering developmental education to ensure that adult students who need extra academic support are able to build momentum and succeed in college-level courses during their first year. According to MCC President Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, “This investment by the State of Michigan will enable us to accelerate the implementation of classes and support programs designed to increase student retention and success, particularly for people of color, first-generation and at-risk students.”
The 60 by 30 Student Success grants were awarded based on a competitive application process, and will provide funding for grantees to implement and institutionalize new strategies to increase completion rates for Futures for Frontliners and Michigan Reconnect students above each college’s current rate for all adult students.
Summer Fun in the District and Genesee County June 25: After its cancellation in 2020, the Grand Blanc Beer 5K is returning to its original location, Bicentennial Park, this year. The event begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 25.
Aug. 3: The Grand Blanc Township Police Department is hosting its annual National Night Out from 5-8 p.m. on Aug. 3, at the township police department (off Saginaw Road). The event will include activities for all ages, provide crime prevention material and public safety demonstrations and serve as an opportunity to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement.
Aug 17-21: Back to the Bricks returns this year from Aug. 17- 21,. After canceling the 2020 event due to COVID-19, this year’s festival promises to bring enjoyment back to the area. It kicks off on Tuesday, Aug. 17 with a family-oriented “Bricks Flicks” event at the U.S. 23 Drive-In theater on Fenton Road. At 6 p.m. on Friday, there will be a car show and concert on Saginaw Street.
Aug 23-29: The fourth playing of the Ally Challenge will run from Aug. 23– 29, at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc. The community concert following the completion of the second round of competition on Aug. 28 features country band Little Big Town, who are sure to put on a fantastic show.
Aug. 23-29: The Genesee County Fair returns this year from Aug. 23– 29, . This family favorite event hosts a monster truck show, rodeo, concerts, rides, food, fun and more.
