LANSING, Mich., July 1, 2022 — Today, the Michigan House of Representatives passed the fiscal year 2023 state budget. Through negotiation and compromise, policymakers have agreed on a budget that works for Michiganders by including significant investments in education, local government services and the economy. After the budget vote, state Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“I am very glad that several district specific priorities are included in the finalized state budget. This 2023 budget provides more opportunities to alleviate economic stresses on working families, to build safety-nets for kids and to address infrastructure needs. I’m proud to have worked to secure key areas of the budget that include funds for MI Connect to get people trained for the jobs of today and tomorrow. The budget sets a pathway for better-paying jobs, which makes for a stronger economy and for people to best provide for their families. There are budget wins for education, too; for example, it contains a 5.2% increase to the foundation allowance, increasing the per pupil allocation to $9,150. Additionally, we’ve included funds to make Michigan safer via community policing grants and expenditures for law enforcement training. Today, I have good reason to be optimistic about Detroit’s future and Michigan’s broadly.”
