Dear Neighbor,

Welcome to my e-newsletter! I just want to take this opportunity to update you on some of the things I’m working on in the Capitol and to invite you to my upcoming coffee hours.

I’m deeply grateful to have the privilege to serve as representative for the 6th House District. If there is anything I can do to help you and your family, please do not hesitate to call, email or stop by my office in Lansing.

Legislative Update

Protecting our Communities

Like many of you, I was jolted awake in the middle of the night a few weeks ago by the incident at the Marathon refinery. For too long, we have allowed industries to monitor themselves and the toxic chemicals they release, putting our families and environment at risk. I recently introduced House Bill 4264 to require that any civil or administrative fines imposed on a corporation for polluting our air are invested back in the affected community to mitigate any harm done and protect our families in the future.

Standing for Criminal Justice

Criminal justice, at its core, should be about rehabilitating those convicted of crimes to enable us to safely welcome them back into our communities after they’ve paid their debt to society. This includes making sure that those in critically poor health have access to the medical care they need. My House Bill 4130 would allow limited parole for inmates proven to be medically frail so that they can access adequate offsite care when they need it.

I am proud to announce this legislation passed the House on March 12 with a vote of 104-6.
