LANSING, Mich., July 26, 2023 — The Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) announced that the Michigan Strategic Fund has approved incentives to support the redevelopment of the former Anson Hotel, transforming it into a mixed-use development that includes eight housing units and 4,500 square feet of commercial space. In response to the announcement, state Rep. Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek) issued the following statement:

“This funding that is coming to Battle Creek is thrilling news. A restoration of this building on Michigan Avenue in our city will create more housing in the downtown area. Plus, the commercial space is anticipated to be the location for the Sprout BC Co-op market that will bring fresh food access to our downtown community members and the neighborhoods nearby. We certainly can’t forget that this project will create jobs for our community, as well. This is a triple win. Battle Creek has always been such a special place to call home, and we just keep getting more fortunate as our community expands and thrives.”

The building has been vacant since 1997 and has been slated for demolition three separate times due to exposure to the elements. To stabilize the property and attract a new private development partner, Battle Creek Unlimited purchased the building and installed a new roof in 2020. The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $3 million and create 10 full-time equivalent jobs, supported by a $1.5 million Michigan Community Revitalization Program performance-based grant.
