LANSING — State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) has introduced legislation to include components on sexual harassment and sexual violence within public schools’ sex education programs. The goal of the bill is to reduce rates of sexual harassment and assault within communities.
“We must hold ourselves to a higher standard in eradicating sexual misconduct and sexual violence,” Hammoud said. “This bill intends to do so by providing students with a more comprehensive education, including preventative measures and helpful resources. Addressing systemic issues of harassment and violence early on is essential in building safer communities for everyone.”
House Bill 5336 amends the Revised School Code to update sex education curriculum. Specifically, the curriculum includes:
- Education concerning sexual harassment and sexual violence among peers and in dating relationships.
- Strategies for the prevention of sexual harassment and violence.
- Steps for reporting sexual harassment or sexual violence.
- Resources for victims of sexual harassment or sexual violence.
- Affirmative consent standards.
- Establishes boundaries among peers and in dating relationships.
- Instruction concerning state and federal law on sexual harassment and sexual violence.
