“The confidence and security of our elections is the bedrock of our democracy. The Wayne County Board of Canvassers deadlocking is a travesty that is both shameful and unprecedented in Michigan’s history.
“There is absolutely no legal basis for the Republican canvassers to abandon their responsibility to certify the general election result—that was a fair, free and secure election—as required by statute.
“This partisan political stunt is unconscionable and a blatant effort to disenfranchise legally cast votes by Detroit residents. It also is undeniably rooted in something far more insidious: racism.
“Michigan law is clear, and the voters have decided. It’s time to set the conspiracy theories and partisan gamesmanship aside, complete the canvass, and certify the election.”
